Admiral’s series was a series of 10 mansions owned by the United States National Guard that were previously used by naval commanders at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City’s borough of Brooklyn. The residences were erected between 1864 and 1901.
Although the original Navy Yard was closed in the mid-1960s, some personnel remained housed in officers’ quarters until the mid-1970s. After that, several of the structures on Admiral’s Row deteriorated to the point of collapse. The majority of Admiral’s Row was demolished in 2016 as part of a redevelopment of Brooklyn Navy Yard, leaving only one house and a timber shed. A store and an office complex are being built on the site of Admiral’s Row.
Admiral’s Row was established on the grounds of a former mill pond that existed in the early history of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The majority of the residences, which included Quarters B through G, were constructed prior to 1873. Construction on the first houses, Quarters E, F, and G, in the French Empire architectural style, commenced in 1864 at the location of the Remsens’ mill pond. Quarters E served as the residence for the naval constructor, while Quarters F was designated for the chief engineer, and Quarters G was intended for the surgeon. Each of these structures featured six to seven bedrooms and three bathrooms.
Adjacent to these residences, to the west, stood Quarters B, the captain’s residence, likely built around 1872 and distinguished as the largest house in Admiral’s Row. Following Quarters B was Quarters D, the residence of the ordnance officer, which was probably constructed the subsequent year. Situated to the west of Quarters D was Quarters C, the residence of the equipment officer, characterized by its French Second Empire architectural style, and erected in 1872.
