According to data from the 2010 United States Census, Auburndale had a population of 19,996, which marked a slight decrease of 205 (1.0%) from the 20,201 recorded in 2000. Spanning an area of 785.35 acres (317.82 ha), the neighborhood had a population density of 25.5 inhabitants per acre (16,300/sq mi; 6,300/km2).
In terms of racial composition, the neighborhood was reported as 44.8% (8,954) White, 1.0% (209) African American, 0.1% (12) Native American, 40.9% (8,169) Asian, with no recorded Pacific Islander population. Additionally, 0.1% (25) were classified as belonging to other races, while 1.4% (284) identified as being of two or more races. Hispanic or Latino individuals of any race accounted for 11.7% (2,343) of the population.
The predominant style of house in Auburndale is the Tudor. The Auburndale Improvement Association, in collaboration with other organizations, endeavors to maintain the neighborhood’s small-scale, lawns-and-driveways character. In many respects, Auburndale’s ambiance resembles that of nearby suburban Nassau County more than typical New York City neighborhoods.
In addition to Tudor-style homes, spacious Dutch colonials and Cape Cod houses are also prevalent in Auburndale. Home prices in the area range from $499,000 to approximately $1.5 million, with an average price around $650,000.
2010 census
As of the 2010 census, the population of Floral Park was 87% White, with 81.6% being Non-Hispanic White. The racial composition also included 1.3% Black or African American, 0.1% Native American, 6.9% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 2.6% from other races, and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race made up 8.8% of the population.
2000 census
As of the 2000 census, Floral Park had a population of 15,967 people, 5,770 households, and 4,258 families. The population density was 11,635.9 inhabitants per square mile (4,492.6/km²). There were 5,892 housing units at an average density of 4,293.8 per square mile (1,657.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 93.56% White, 0.46% African American, 0.06% Native American, 3.88% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race comprised 5.38% of the population.
Of the 5,770 households, 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.9% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. Additionally, 23.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76, and the average family size was 3.30.
The village’s population was spread out, with 24.5% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% aged 65 years or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 89.3 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.
The median household income in the village was $113,719, and the median family income was $137,243. Males had a median income of $56,527 compared to $38,592 for females. The per capita income for the village was $51,183. No families or individuals were below the poverty line, including those under age 18 and those age 65 or over.
As of 2011, the average and median sales prices of homes in the village were $468,738 and $460,000, respectively.
The New York City Department of Education oversees Auburndale’s public schools, with Francis Lewis High School being the largest public high school in the neighborhood.
Additionally, the Queens Public Library operates the Auburndale Branch located at 25-55 Francis Lewis Boulevard.
Auburndale is well-connected by highways, including the Clearview Expressway (I-295) and the Long Island Expressway (I-495).
For public transportation, Auburndale is served by the Auburndale station, which is one of the express stations on the Long Island Rail Road’s Port Washington Branch. This provides connections to Manhattan, northern Queens, and Long Island. Additionally, the New York City Subway’s 7 and <7> trains serve nearby Flushing at Flushing–Main Street station.
New York City Bus operates several local routes in the area, including the Q12, Q13, Q16, Q26, Q27, Q28, Q30, Q31, and Q76, as well as the QM3 express route. Moreover, the Nassau Inter-County Express’ n20G route also serves Auburndale, enhancing its connectivity options.
