At 50 feet (15 meters) above sea level, it is one of Queens’ highest points, along with Jackson Heights and Richmond Hill.
The public elementary schools in Cambria Heights are PS/MS 147 Ronald McNair (grades PK–8) and PS 176 Cambria Heights (grades PK–5). The Andrew Jackson High School campus is home to four magnet high schools: one for business computer applications; another for the arts and humanities; a fourth for mathematics, science, and technology; and a fifth for law, government, and community service.
Cambria Heights’ population was 18,677 in 2010 according to data from the US Census, down 2,267 (10.8%) from the 20,944 people enumerated in 2000. The neighborhood, which occupied 772.01 acres (312.42 hectares), had a population density of 24.2 people per acre (15,500/sq mi; 6,000/km2).
1.4% (259) of the neighborhood’s population was White, 90.3% (16,862) African American, 0.2% (42) Native American, 0.8% (157) Asian, 0.0% (6) Pacific Islander, 0.3% (62) of other racial groups, and 1.7% (325) of multiracial groupings. Latino or Hispanic, regardless of race, made up 5.2% (964).
Jewish families moving from Brooklyn and Roman Catholics of Italian, German, and Irish ancestry made up the majority of the original population. African Americans and Caribbean middle class residents abound in the current neighborhood. $450,600 is the median cost of a home.
