The primary business center in the neighborhood, Central Avenue, was known for many years as Long Island’s Rodeo Drive, drawing discerning customers from all over the area with its premium stores and boutiques. Numerous shops and eateries in the area now serve the needs of the growing Orthodox Jewish community. Many of the businesses on the street are closed on Saturdays since observant Jews do not shop on the Jewish Sabbath. This reduces foot traffic for the stores that are open on Saturdays.

The village’s whole area, all land, is 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), according to the US Census Bureau.
The village had 6,164 residents, 2,289 households, and 1,636 families as of the 2000 census. There were 9,042.0 people per square mile (3,491.1/km2) in the population. At an average density of 3,470.7 per square mile (1,340.0/km2), there were 2,366 dwelling units. 90.74% of the village’s population was White, 1.28% African American, 0.11% Native American, 3.08% Asian, 2.94% other ethnic groups, and 1.85% multiracial. 8.35% of people identified as Hispanic or Latino, regardless of race.
There were 2,289 homes, of which 31.5% included children under the age of 18, 59.1% consisted of married couples, 9.2% included a female householder living alone, and 28.5% did not belong to a family. Individuals made up 24.5% of all households, and 13.6% of them had a single person 65 years of age or older. 3.25 was the average family size while 2.69 was the average household size.
The population of the village was distributed, with 6.3% being between the ages of 18 and 24, 27.5% being between the ages of 25 and 44, 24.0% being between the ages of 45 and 64, and 17.2% being 65 or older.
The Lawrence Public Schools provide education for Cedarhurst, which is a member of School District 15. Cedarhurst is home to Lawrence High School and the #5 Elementary School, which both serve pupils from a number of nearby areas.
Located on Central Avenue in Cedarhurst are the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns, Rockaway High School, and a Kahal school.
