The CDP is 5.6 square miles (14.6 km2) in total, of which 5.2 square miles (13.5 km2) are land and 0.42 square miles (1.1 km2), or 7.36%, are water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The CDP was home to 6,655 individuals, 2,319 households, and 1,776 families as of the 2000 census. There were 1,327.2 people per square mile (512.4/km2) at that population density. At an average density of 491.6 per square mile (189.8/km2), there were 2,465 dwelling units. 90.02% of the CDP’s population was White, 5.24% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.99% Asian, 1.29% of its members were other races, and 2.28% were multiracial. Latinos or Hispanics of any race made up 6.61% of the total population.
There were 2,319 homes, of which 36.2% included children under the age of 18, 62.7% included married couples, 9.4% included a female householder living alone, and 23.4% did not include a family. Individuals made up 17.4% of all households, and 6.8% of them had a single person 65 years of age or older. 3.20 was the average family size while 2.83 was the average size of a household.
The population of the CDP was dispersed, with 12.1% being 65 years of age or older, 7.0% being between the ages of 18 and 24, 32.9% being between the ages of 25 and 44, and 25.1% being under the age of 18. Thirty-seven was the median age. There were 97.3 men for every 100 females. There were 95.1 men for every 100 girls over the age of 18.
In 2016, $95,932 was the median income for a household in the CDP. In the CDP, the per capita income was $38,431. 6.5% of people and 4.5% of households lived below the poverty line; this group included 7.6% of people under 18 and 9.7% of people 65 and over.
Clayton Huey Elementary School, Center Moriches Middle School, and Center Moriches High School are the hamlet’s four educational institutions. The high school and middle school are housed in the same structure. Our Lady Queen of Apostles Regional Catholic School, a private institution, is situated behind St. John the Evangelist Church.
WJVC, a radio station on 96.1 FM, is authorized to broadcast in Center Moriches.
Center Moriches appears in the Cary Grant-starred CBS Radio drama Suspense episode “On a Country Road” from the 1950s.
