A few affluent families inhabited a large portion of what is now the East Hills for a very long period. The Mackay estate hosted the Prince of Wales in 1924, before he abdicated the English throne to wed Mrs. Simpson. Aviation pioneer Charles A.
Village of East Hills (1931 – present)
The Village of East Hills held its first election in barns at the Mackay estate a few weeks after it was formed on June 24, 1931. Many residents wanted to avoid paying taxes for sanitary sewage systems, highways, etc.; others wanted to avoid being a part of the Roslyn sewage District and keep businesses out; still others wanted to retain local sovereignty through municipal home rule powers. These were among the reasons for incorporation. As early plans intended for that village’s planned boundaries to include what would become East Hills, many of the ideas that the neighbors objected were made when Roslyn originally wanted to incorporate. Because of this, the locals made the decision to establish East Hills as a distinct village.
John Mackay, Stephen Willets, Ellen A. Hennessy, and Catherine Hechler were chosen as the village trustees, and Mr. Willets was elected mayor. Mrs. Hechler’s husband, Charles Hechler, was named Village Clerk.
East Hills’ location and topography played a role in naming it.The “Hills” represent the village’s hilly terrain, and the “East” represents the village’s actual location next to and east of Roslyn.
The village’s whole land area, as reported by the US Census Bureau, is 2.28 square miles (5.9 km2).
Between the 1960 and 1970 censuses, the village gained territory from the nearby Incorporated Village of Brookville; this little area is the village’s portion that is located inside the Town of Oyster Bay.
