Originally named Old Fields, the hamlet adopted the name Greenlawn upon the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road around 1870 or 1871. The LIRR selected “Greenlawn” for its station name, aiming to evoke an idealized rural/suburban ambiance and encourage travel to the beaches in Centerport. In the 19th century, Greenlawn gained renown for its pickle production, along with lesser-scale potato and cabbage farms. The primary commodity, pickles, continues to be celebrated through the annual Pickle Festival organized by the local Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association at the John Gardiner Farm. While the Gardiner family initially gained prominence as pickle farmers in the area, Samuel Ballton, a former enslaved man, earned the title “The Pickle King” for his prolific pickle farming endeavors in Greenlawn during the early 1900s.
Greenlawn is situated at 40°51′28″N 73°21′57″W (40.857648, -73.365932). According to data from the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place (CDP) spans a total area of 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²), with all of it consisting of land.
Demographics of the CDP
In 2010, the census reported 13,742 individuals, residing in 4,560 households and 3,345 families within the CDP. The population density was 3,714.1 inhabitants per square mile (1,434.0/km²), with 4,722 housing units at an average density of 1,276.2 per square mile (492.7/km²). The racial composition was 74.0% White, 13.9% African American, 0.4% Native American, 4.1% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, with 4.9% identifying with other races and 2.7% identifying with two or more races. Additionally, 12.5% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Of the 4,560 households, 39.6% had children under 18 living with them, 57.8% were headed by married couples living together, 11.9% were led by a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% were non-families. Individual households comprised 22.4%, with 13.8% being individuals aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.94, and the average family size was 3.45.
Age distribution in the CDP was as follows: 25.6% under 18, 7.0% aged 18 to 24, 22.7% aged 25 to 44, 28.2% aged 45 to 64, and 16.6% aged 65 or older, with a median age of 41.9 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.4 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 87.8 males.
For the period spanning 2007–2011, the median annual household income in the CDP was $92,664, with a median family income of $116,768. Median income for males was $73,659 compared to $59,107 for females. The per capita income was $40,484. Approximately 2.1% of families and 3.5% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 0.8% of those under age 18 and 9.6% of those aged 65 or older.
