Hicksville is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, Long Island, New York, located in the Town of Oyster Bay. 43,869 people were living in the CDP as of the 2020 census.
Valentine Hicks, the future president of the Long Island Rail Road and the son-in-law of abolitionist and Quaker preacher Elias Hicks, purchased land in the village in 1834 and converted it into an LIRR station stop in 1837. Produce was dumped at the station, mostly cucumbers for a facility owned by the Heinz Company. The farmers planted potatoes when a blight decimated their cucumber harvests. The hamlet was named for Valentine Hicks, who helped transform it into a thriving suburb of New York City during the post-World War II building boom.
Failed incorporation attempt
Hicksville made a bid to become the Incorporated Village of Hicksville in 1953. Many locals believed that the village would be managed more efficiently as a result of its incorporation than the Town of Oyster Bay. Residents had signed a petition supporting the development with 6,242 signatures.
But these plans failed, and as of 2023, Hicksville is still an unincorporated part of the Town of Oyster Bay.
The CDP is 6.8 square miles (18 km2) in total, of which 6.8 square miles (18 km2) are land and 0.15% are water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Climate
The local hardiness zone is 7a, and the climate lies on the border between humid subtropical (Cfa) and hot-summer humid continental (Dfa). The village center experiences monthly averages ranging from 31.9 °F in January to 74.7 °F in July.
Norbute Corp.’s Metalab Equipment Company produced cabinets and furnishings for laboratories. From 1975 to 1991, Alsy Manufacturing produced electric lamps and lampshades.
In 1945, the Rubber Company of America (RUCO) constructed a manufacturing facility. Hooker Chemical Company, also known as RUCO Polymer Corp., produced latex, esters, and plastics. From 1966 until 1982, this location was owned and run by Occidental Chemical Corporation (OCC). After Sybron Corporation bought the property, the Hooker Ruco factory was acquired by Bayer Corporation (Bayer MaterialScience) in 2000, and the facility was shut down in 2002. A spur track off the Main Line near to the grade crossing at New South Road served the facility, which was a freight client of the Long Island Rail Road and the New York and Atlantic Railway. From 1982 until 2002, the location was utilized to produce polyester.
Given the existence of a significant LIRR hub, Hicksville evolved become one of New York City’s primary bedroom communities. For off-line freight clients receiving or exporting cargo by rail to any location in the North American rail network, the LIRR maintains a team yard on West John Street, just east of Charlotte Avenue, which is served by the New York and Atlantic Railway.
North Broadway in Hicksville, which is in the middle of Nassau County, has grown to be a major shopping district. The Mid-Island Shopping Plaza, now known as Broadway Mall, a 156,000-square-foot Sears department store and auto center, as well as a number of other eateries and retail establishments, were located on North Broadway. Sears closed its doors in 2018.
In the CDP, there were 13,409 houses and 43,869 residents as of the 2020 US Census. 6,458.9 persons were living there per square mile.
47.2% of the population was White, 32.8% Asian, 3.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 6.9% was from two or more races, and 13.6% was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
A household in the CDP has a median annual income of $123,230 during the years 2017–2021. In the CDP, the per capita income was $46,504. 4.1% of the population lived in poverty.
School Districts
The Hicksville Union Free School District’s borders comprise the majority of Hicksville’s territory. However, a tiny amount of the hamlet’s northeastern corner is inside the Syosset Central School District’s limits, while a minor section of the hamlet’s southeast corner is inside the Bethpage Union Free School District’s. Therefore, depending on where they live in the hamlet, students who live in Hicksville and attend public schools attend school in one of these three districts. In 2023, the National Center for Education Statistics placed Hicksville High School in the top 30% of New York schools.
Library Districts
Hicksville is served by the Hicksville Library District, the Bethpage Library District, and the Syosset Library District because it is situated inside their borders.[9] These three districts’ boundaries inside the hamlet generally match those of the three school districts.
