Historically, a large Italian community called Homecrest home. However, the neighborhood has seen a wave of immigration in recent years, with people arriving from Latin America, China, Israel, Russia, and South Asia. This influx has led to a more diverse population makeup. Even a small but thriving Chinese enclave has sprung up along Avenue U, near the subway station.

Homecrest’s landscape reflects a mix of old and new. The early 21st century saw a boom in condominium construction, offering modern living options. On the other hand, many classic two-story homes have undergone renovations, transforming them into luxurious mini-mansions with hefty price tags. South of Avenue V, a different vibe emerges. Here, cozy bungalows and rows of one-story brick homes with shared backyards and driveways dominate the scene. While the neighborhood itself offers peaceful residential living, venturing out to Kings Highway, Coney Island Avenue, or Avenue U puts you right in the thick of shopping areas.

Homecrest caters to families with a range of schooling options. Public schools include P.S. 255 Barbara Reing School, P.S. 153 Homecrest, and J.H.S. 234 W. Arthur Cunningham. If you’re looking for private schools, there’s St. Edmund Preparatory High School, Nefesh Academy For Girls Yeshiva, Prospect Park Girls Yeshiva, and Windmill Montessori School. Higher education opportunities are also nearby with Touro College Graduate School Of Education and Psychology.

Homecrest offers several public parks managed by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. For a full day of fun, head to William E. Kelly Memorial Park along Avenue S. This large park boasts tennis, basketball, and handball courts alongside a playground for the kids. If basketball or handball are your jam, Kelly Playground at East 16th and Avenue S is another option. This spot is especially popular with nearby schools during the day. In the past, it even featured a wading pool, seesaws, and benches, though it’s unclear if these amenities remain. Finally, Mellett Playground on Avenue V offers a more modest selection of basketball hoops, a handball court, and a dedicated space for younger children.

Homecrest is known for its safety. The neighborhood is patrolled by the 61st Precinct of the NYPD, which consistently ranks among the city’s safest precincts. Crime rates have seen a significant drop since the 1990s, with an overall decrease of 88.2% across all categories. Even in 2018, the reported crimes were relatively low, with only 1 murder, 17 rapes, and 150 robberies.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Homecrest Health Center, located at 1601 Avenue S at East 16th Street, is a public health facility. The community is served by Coney Island Hospital, New York-Presbyterian, and Beth Israel’s Kings Highway Division. Additionally, numerous private outpatient medical facilities have emerged in the area.

The community has a growing Jewish population, served by several Orthodox synagogues, both Ashkenazic and Sephardic. St. Edmunds Roman Catholic Parish, The First Baptist Church of Sheepshead Bay, The Homecrest Presbyterian Church, and other congregations cater to various denominations, serving the growing Asian population. Additionally, there is a Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall nearby.
