Lido Beach is a US census-designated place (CDP) and hamlet located in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York. Situated in the local metropolitan region, it is a suburb of the City of Long Beach, situated on the Long Beach Barrier Island. When the 2020 census was taken, there were 2,719 people living there.
William H. Reynolds created Lido Beach in the early 1900s. In addition to creating four Brooklyn neighborhoods—Bedford-Stuyvesant, Borough Park, Bensonhurst, and South Brownsville—the 39-year-old former state senator and real estate mogul had also built Dreamland, the biggest amusement park in the world, on Coney Island. Reynolds produced plays and ran a theater.
He assembled investors and bought the remainder of Long Beach island from the Town of Hempstead and the seafront from individual owners starting in 1906. In order to create the Long Beach, New York vacation area, he intended to dredge Reynolds Channel and construct a promenade, residences, and hotels. Dredging improved recreational boating access to the island.
