For many years, Manorville was a tiny farming village in the hamlet. The hamlet’s present location was formerly a part of the enormous estate known as Manor St. George, which was granted to Col. William “Tangier” Smith in 1693 as payment for his leadership of Tangier, Morocco. St. George’s Manor was a station established by the Long Island Rail Road in 1844. It was located off of Ryerson Avenue. But because of its association with the British and their colonial domination, Seth Raynor, the station agent and American Revolutionary War hero, detested the name (Saint George, the patron saint of
England is a representation of the English monarchy), therefore they chose to cover the sign with paint so that just the word “Manor” remained. The hamlet was renamed “Manorville” when the post office opened in 1907; nevertheless, the name “Manor” was still used in timetables and Long Island Rail Road paperwork until 1907 or 1908.
The Long Island serial murderer is sometimes referred to as the “Manorville killer” due to the discovery of four victims’ remains there between 2000 and 2011.
Manorville is located in the middle of Long Island, far from any bodies of water. It is partially situated on the Ronkonkoma terminal moraine, which produces rather undulating terrain, particularly in the hamlet’s center. Many kettle hole ponds can be found in the area’s glacial terrain; the most well-known is Punk’s Hole, where a Revolutionary War captain is said to have hidden from the British.
The CDP is 25.5 square miles (66.1 km2) in area, of which 25.5 square miles (66.0 km2) are land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.16%, are water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The hamlet is located partly within and on the western fringe of the Central Pine Barrens on Long Island. The area is mostly forested, with some wetlands found in the northern part close to the Peconic River. The majority of the hamlet’s northeastern section is located in the “Core Preservation Area” of the Pine Barrens, where new construction is prohibited. Additionally, this region provides the majority of Long Island’s groundwater reserves.
The CDP was home to 11,131 people, 4,122 households, and 2,938 families as of the 2000 census. There were 438.9 people per square mile (169.5/km2) at that population density. At an average density of 167.3 per square mile (64.6/km2), there were 4,243 dwelling units. 0.66% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.18% African American, 0.89% Native American, 0.75% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races made up the racial composition of the CDP. Latinos or Hispanics of any race made up 4.14% of the total population.
18, 63.4% consisted of married couples living together, 5.9% included a female householder living alone, and 28.7% did not include a family. Individuals made up 24.4% of all households, and people 65 years of age or older lived alone in 9.6% of them. 3.25 people made up the average family while 2.69 people made up the average household.
The population of the hamlet was dispersed, with 13.2% being 65 years of age or older, 5.2% being between the ages of 18 and 24, 33.1% being between the ages of 25 and 44, and 27.6% being under the age of 18.
A 2018 estimate stated that the median income for a family was $131,910 and the median income for a household was $95,851. In the CDP, the per capita income was $41,120. 2.3% of people under the age of 18 and 3.2% of people 65 and older were among the 2.4% of families and 2.8% of the population that lived in poverty.
