The Hempstead Plains were the traditional name for the grassy, level center region of Long Island. Numerous villages were established in this area during the 1800s. One of the settlements was known as “Hempstead Branch,” although it would eventually become known as “Mineola”
As early as 1609, Henry Hudson made a claim to Long Island under the name of the Dutch East India Company. To begin their lives on the Hempstead Plains in the eighteenth century, Dutch and English settlers labored to clear farmland. Miniolagamika, an Algonquin Indian chief, was the inspiration behind the name “Pleasant Village” given to this territory in 1858. Later, the name was changed to “Mineola” and abbreviated.
The village’s total land area, as reported by the US Census Bureau, is 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2).
Williston Park, Garden City, Old Westbury, and East Williston are the villages that surround Mineola. Additionally, Mineola shares borders with the CDP hamlets of Roslyn Heights, Herricks, Garden City Park, and Albertson.
The village expanded its area between the 1990 and 2000 censuses.
Mineola Memorial Park, located close to the village center, has a memorial there in honor of the September 11 terrorist attacks victims. The park is bordered by both public and private schools as well as Mineola’s Memorial Library. Troop 45 Eagle Scout Edward Kaiser’s Eagle Project was the Memorial Tablet and the surrounding walkways.
2010 Census
The village has 18,799 residents as of the 2010 census, with 7,473 households and 4,954 families. 10,337.3 persons per square mile (3,991.3 people/km2) was the population density. At an average density of 4,111.5 per square mile (1,587.5/km2), there were 7,650 dwelling units. There were 81.7% White people living in the village, 71.5% Non-Hispanic White people, 2.0% African Americans, 0.2% Native Americans, 8.5% Asian people, 0.0% Pacific Islanders, 5.3% people of other races, and 2.3% people of two or more races. Any race that is Hispanic or Latino makes up 16.4% of the population.
There were 7,473 households, of which 27.0% included children under the age of 18, 53.2% consisted of married couples, 9.3% included a female householder living alone, and 33.7% did not belong to a family. Individuals made up 29.1% of all households, and 11.8% of those contained a single person 65 years of age or older. 3.20 was the average family size while 2.57 was the average size of a household.
2000 Census
The village has 19,234 residents, 7,473 homes, and 4,954 families as of the 2000 census[34]. 10,337.3 persons per square mile (3,991.3 people/km2) was the population density. At an average density of 4,111.5 per square mile (1,587.5/km2), there were 7,650 dwelling units. With 82.39% of its population being White, 1.03% African American, 0.29% Native American, 4.52% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.93% from other races, and 3.79% from two or more races, the community was ethnically composed. Any race that is Hispanic or Latino makes up 13.03% of the population.

The Village of Mineola Board of Trustees, the village’s legislative body, is made up of four trustees and the mayor. Every member is chosen to serve a term of four years. The board is in responsible of overseeing the village’s assets and finances, and it has the authority to take whatever legal action necessary to ensure the community is run well. To solve village issues, the trustees have the authority to enact a wide range of local legislation.
They are designated as liaison officers to the village’s numerous community organizations, providing updates to the board at board sessions.
