A hamlet and census-designated place (CDP), New Cassel is located in the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island, New York, USA. At 14,059 in the 2010 census, there had been a net increase in population from the 2000 census of 761.
One of the earliest African American settlements on Long Island to be free was New Cassel, New York. Midway through the 1700s, a group of African American farmers who had formerly been slaves created it. Many prosperous middle-class families, including many Black and Latino soldiers, moved there after World War II. Haitian and Latino families began to settle in New Cassel in greater numbers by the latter part of the 20th century.
New Cassel declined to be taken into the nearby village of Westbury when it merged in 1932 out of concern that taxes would increase. As such, it would continue to be an unincorporated hamlet under the direct administration of the Manhasset Town of North Hempstead.
The CDP is all land, with a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2), according to the US Census Bureau.
13,298 people, 2,972 homes, and 2,448 families were living in the CDP as of the 2000 census. There were 9,072.8 people per square mile (3,503.0/km2) in the population. At an average density of 2,092.5 per square mile (807.9/km2), there were 3,067 dwelling units. 31.64 percent of the CDP’s population was White, 47.32 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 1.41% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 12.59% other racial groups, and 6.55% two or more racial groups. Latino or Hispanic, regardless of race, made up 41.11% of the population.
There were 2,972 houses, of which 50.2% were married couples living together, 40.6% included children under the age of 18, 22.9% included a female householder living alone, and 17.6% did not belong to a family. Individuals made up 12.7% of all households, and 7.0% of them included a single person 65 years of age or older. The average family size was 4.40, and the average size of a household was 4.46.
With 28.9% of the population under 18, 12.3% between the ages of 18 and 24, 32.7% between the ages of 25 and 44, 17.6% between the ages of 45 and 64, and 8.5% over the age of 65, the population of the CDP was dispersed. Thirty was the median age. There were 99.0 men for every 100 females. There were 98.1 males for every 100 girls over the age of 18.
In the CDP, the median income for a family was $69,044 and the median income for a household was $71,270. The median income for men was $22,526 while it was $28,193 for women. In the CDP, the per capita income was $15,673. 14.8% of people, including 19.5% of those under the age of 18 and 13.7% of those 65 and over, and 10.5% of families were living in poverty.

The town is divided by the Long Island Rail Road tracks, however the hamlet does not have a stop. The western part of the hamlet is walkable from the Westbury station, which had a station for a brief period of time in the 19th century [citation needed]. As a result, the n22 and n22X routes serve the northern part of New Cassel along Prospect Avenue, while the N24 serves the southern portion along Old Country Road. These routes all connect Jamaica with Hicksville.
