Ocean Parkway is a 4.86-mile (7.82-kilometer) street in Brooklyn’s west-central area. The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) lists it as New York State Route 908H (NY 908), an unsigned reference route. The parkway is a New York City scenic landmark that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Ocean Parkway is approximately five miles (8 kilometers) long, spanning virtually north to south from Machate Circle at the southern part of Prospect Park to the Atlantic Ocean shoreline at Brighton Beach. The stretch south of Church Avenue, which is 4.86 miles (7.82 kilometers) long, is designated as an unsigned reference route by the NYCDOT.Ocean Parkway begins at Machate Circle, at Prospect Park’s southern gate, and runs west before joining with Prospect Expressway to the south.2 After ending at Church Avenue, the freeway continues past Windsor Terrace and what is now known as Kensington. The parkway runs almost parallel to Coney Island Avenue, a major commercial thoroughfare several blocks to the east. After passing past many communities such as Midwood, Homecrest, and Sheepshead Bay, the parkway finishes at Surf Avenue in Brighton Beach, near the Riegelmann Boardwalk and the beach.
In 1866, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who also designed Central Park and Prospect Park, recommended the construction of Eastern Parkway and Ocean Parkway to Brooklyn park commissioners. The proposed Ocean and Eastern Parkways would connect Prospect Park with Coney Island and East New York, respectively. Their parkway design was inspired by boulevards such as Berlin’s Unter den Linden and Paris’ Avenue Foch. However, Ocean and Eastern Parkways were thought to be better than these two thoroughfares because they would have service lanes separated from the main road by tree-lined medians. Because the road to Coney Island would reach the water, it was thus called the “Ocean Parkway”.On May 11, 1869, the New York State Legislature authorized the City of Brooklyn commissioners to “lay out, open, and improve a public highway or avenue from Prospect Park, in the City of Brooklyn, to Coney Island.”The statute was revised in 1872.Construction of the parkway began in 1874, with the portion between Prospect Park and Kings Highway opened the following year. The last stretch of Coney Island began in “early spring” 1876 and was completed on November 11, that year.Landowners whose properties were 1,050 feet (320 meters) on either side of the parkway covered the construction costs. The costs were expected at the time to be $1 million (equivalent to $28,568,000 in 2023), with the stretch north of Kings Highway accounting for three-fourths of the total. Following legislation established in 1882, these landowners were relieved of two-thirds of their costs.
Horseback riding
Bridle pathways were also used on Ocean Parkway in the past. The bridle pathways ran along the eastern side of Ocean Parkway, and equestrians could rent horses near Prospect Park and ride them all the way to Coney Island. Horse and sleigh racing used to take place on the parkway’s bridle pathways. Horse racing took occurred at both the Gravesend Race Track and Brighton Beach Race Course, which were adjacent to Ocean Parkway. In 1908 or 1910, a ban on open betting went into force, and horse racing were discontinued at all of these sites.
Much of Ocean Parkway is zoned for medium- to high-rise residential buildings. Around 1900, residences were built around the parkway’s border, followed by several mansions during World War I. Buyers traveled to Ocean Parkway from Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Heights, and Bushwick. In the 1920s, apartment complexes and one- and two-family residences were built; the northernmost section of the parkway was transformed into magnificent, elevator-equipped apartment buildings. In the 1970s, the communities near Ocean Parkway had the highest number of Syrian Jews in the United States. In 1980, it was projected that Syrian Jews constituted 60 to 70 percent of the population. This was mirrored in the large density of synagogues, yeshivas, and other traditionally Jewish organizations along Ocean Parkway.
The Ocean Parkway station in Brighton Beach is served by the New York City Subway’s BMT Brighton Line (Q train). The B1, B4, and B36 all go on the parkway in Sheepshead Bay, but the B9 only travels one block in Midwood.
