The hamlet serves as the Greater Port Washington area’s anchor community. In 2020, there were 16,753 people living there.
After buying property from the Matinecock Nation, Europeans first settled in a large portion of the Port Washington region in 1644.
With the largest sandbank east of the Mississippi and convenient barge access to Manhattan, Port Washington rose to prominence as a sand mining town in the 1870s. About 140 million cubic yards of the region’s sand were used to make concrete for the New York City Subway and skyscrapers, such as the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. The sand mines were renovated in 1998 to become Harbor Links, a golf course for the people of North Hempstead.
Port Washington attempted to become a city in 1930; its limits would have been the same as those of the Port Washington Union Free School District, with the exception of Sands Point, which had been a village beforehand. This idea was finally derailed when Baxter Estates, Flower Hill, and Manorhaven formed as villages to maintain home authority over their own territories, resulting in the bill’s death.
The CDP is 5.6 square miles (15 km2) in total, of which 4.2 square miles (11 km2) are land and 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2), or 25.22%, are water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The hamlet is surrounded by water on two sides: Hempstead Harbor to the east and Manhasset Bay to the west.
Cow Neck Peninsula is home to Port Washington.
There are two enclaves situated above the northern areas of the hamlet’s main, continuous section.
Port Washington has a large number of small businesses in addition to six shopping complexes, four strip malls, and an industrial complex off West Shore Road on the east side of the city, close to Hempstead Harbor. That industrial complex houses a Hilton Garden Inn, Entertainment One, NPD Group, Pall, and Systemax.
2010 Census
Numbers as of the 2010 census were 15,846. Eighty-two percent of the population was White, two percent African American, two percent Native American, eight percent Asian, four percent from other races, and two percent from two or more races. Of all races, 13.4% of persons identified as Hispanic or Latino. In Port Washington, New York, the mean household income is $189,892, while the median household income is $127,813.
2000 Census
The CDP was home to 15,215 people, 5,521 households, and 4,168 families as of the 2000 census. There were 3,613.7 people per square mile (1,395.3/km2) at that density. At an average density of 1,344.8 per square mile (519.2/km2), there were 5,662 dwelling units. The CDP’s racial composition was as follows: 2.81% African American, 0.11% Native American, 6.07% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.15% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. The majority of the population was White.
There were 5,521 households, of which 36.3% were occupied by children under the age of 18, 62.9% by married couples, and 24.5% by non-families. Of all households, 20.4% consisted of single people, and 10.4% included an individual 65 years of age or older living alone. 3.15 was the average family size while 2.73 was the average size of a household.
Town representation
The Town of North Hempstead directly governs Port Washington, an unincorporated area within the Town. It is totally contained within the Town of North Hempstead’s 6th council district, which Mariann Dalimonte (D–Port Washington) represents on the North Hempstead Town Council as of August 2022.

Port Washington is situated in the 11th Legislative district of Nassau County, which as of August 2022 is represented by Delia DiRiggi-Whitton (D–Glen Cove) in the Nassau County Legislature.

Port Washington is situated in the 16th Assembly district of the New York State Assembly, which Gina Sillitti (D–Manorhaven) will be representing as of August 2022.
School district
Because Port Washington is inside the Port Washington Union Free School District’s limits, it is served by it. Furthermore, a tiny section of the southeast part of the hamlet lies under the limits of the Roslyn Union Free School District. All of the pupils who live in the hamlet and attend public schools attend Port Washington’s schools because there are no properties in the region that fall within the boundaries of the Roslyn UFSD.
Paul D. Schreiber Senior High School, part of the Port Washington UFSD, was ranked #77 in New York State high schools out of 1,212 and #733 nationwide out of 17,843 schools in 2022.

The Port Washington Library District encompasses the entire city of Port Washington.
