From the beginning of the ZIP Code system until 1998, the postal zones of Queens and western Nassau County—whose separation from Queens County in 1899 had no effect on postal routes—were organized according to which primary post office routed the neighborhood’s postal mail. The name of the major post office served as the default name for the accompanying ZIP code. For example, Fresh Meadows postal mail was routed through Flushing’s main post office, and Fresh Meadows ZIP Codes 11365 and 11366 were both designated as “Flushing”.
