Formerly known as South Westbury, Salisbury is a census-designated place (CDP) and hamlet located in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island, New York, USA. 12,093 people were counted in the 2010 census.
Adjacent to Eisenhower Park, formerly known as Salisbury Park, are numerous Levitt type residences.
It shares fire districts with Westbury and East Meadow and is served by the Long Island Railroad’s Westbury Railroad Station.
The reason Salisbury got its name is that it is situated on a wide, level stretch of the wider Hempstead Plains, which gave late 19th-century Long Islanders a sense of déjà vu for the Salisbury Plain in England, which is home to Stonehenge. For the census taken in 1990, the CDP was officially known by this name instead of its previous designation, South Westbury, which indicated that it was located directly south of Westbury.
The CDP is 1.7 square miles (4.5 km2) in total, of which 1.7 square miles (4.5 km2) are land and 0.57% are water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The elevation of Salisbury, according to the US Geological Survey, is 108 feet (33 m).
12,341 people, 4,015 households, and 3,340 families called the CDP home at the time of the 2000 census. There were 7,164.1 people per square mile (2,766.1/km2) at that population density. At an average density of 2,352.3 per square mile (908.2/km2), there were 4,052 dwelling units. Any race that identified as Hispanic or Latino made up 8.56% of the population.
Of the 4,015 homes, 37.2% included children under the age of 18, 69.9% included married couples, 10.4% included a single woman living alone, and 16.8% did not belong to a family. Individuals made up 13.9% of all households, and 8.3% of them included a single person 65 years of age or older. The mean dimensions of households and families were 3.06 and 3.35, respectively.
24.4% of the population was under the age of 18, 7.1% was between the ages of 18 and 24, 28.2% was between 25 and 44, 24.7% was between 45 and 64, and 15.6% was over the age of 65.
