About 32 miles (50 km) east of Midtown Manhattan, 14 miles (20 km) east of the Queens border, 23 miles (40 km) southeast of the Throgs Neck Bridge, and 168 miles (270 km) southeast of Albany, the state capital, are the approximate locations of Syosset. Syosset is bounded to the north by Laurel Hollow and Oyster Bay, to the east by Woodbury, to the south by Plainview and Hicksville, and to the west by Jericho and Muttontown. By car, Syosset may be reached from New York City via the Long Island Expressway and the LIRR.
Syosset has 19,259 residents, 6,170 homes, and 5,307 families as of the 2020 U.S. Census. There were 3,785.8 people per square mile (1,461.7/km2) at that population density. At an average density of 1,274.5 per square mile (492.1/km2), there were 6,354 dwelling units. With 1.0% African American, 0.4% Native American, 31.4% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.8% other races, and 1.6% two or more races represented, Syosset’s racial composition was 62.7% White. 4.1% of all people are Latino or Hispanic.
Like many other communities on Long Island’s North Shore, Syosset is home to a sizable Jewish population in addition to a sizable Italian and East Asian population. Chinese or Korean were the primary languages spoken at home by 35.4% of the population, who did not speak English.
8,131 households were found, of which 25.6% included children under the age of 18, married couples made up 75.5% of the households, single women made up 7.5%, and non-families made up 14.4%. Individuals made up 12.6% of all households, while people 65 years of age or more lived alone in 7.6% of them. 3.05 was the average size of a household, and 3.33 was the average size of a family.
