The Dutch West India Company bought the present-day Valley Stream region from the Rockaway Native Americans in 1640, fourteen years after Dutch colonists arrived in Manhattan (New Amsterdam). The Native Americans were a Lenape, or Delaware, band, named for the area in which they lived.
For the next two centuries, this wooded area remained undeveloped due to the westward concentration of population. About 20 households are included in the 1840 census, the most of them were large farm owners. The northwest area was known as “Fosters Meadow” at the time. Due to the presence of taverns, the area that is now Rockaway Avenue’s business district was known as “Rum Junction”. There was “Cookie Hill” in the ritzy north, and “Skunks Misery” in the northeast, which was home to the nearby fertilizer company. One area that still goes by the name Hungry Harbor was once inhabited by a squatter settlement.
On December 3, 1796, Robert Pagan was born in Scotland. Robert, his wife Ellen, and their kids left Scotland sometime in the late 1830s. One of their children passed away and was buried at sea while traveling to the United States. Pagan is identified as a farmer in the Queens County, Massachusetts, U.S. Census of 1840. Robert and Ellen Pagan settled in the Town of Hempstead and had two children.
The hamlet is 3.5 square miles (9.1 km2) in total, of which 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2) are land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2), or 0.86%, are water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The following communities border Valley Stream: Lynbrook, Franklin Square, Hewlett, Woodmere, Rosedale (a Queens neighborhood in New York City), Elmont (home of the Belmont Park racetrack), and Malverne.
The village has 37,511 residents, 12,484 homes, and 9,600 families as of the 2010 census. There were 10,569.5 people per square mile (4,080.9/km2) in the population. At an average density of 3,687.5 per square mile (1,423.8/km2), there were 12,688 dwelling units. The village’s racial composition was 18.57% African American, 0.3% Native American, 11.38% Asian, 8.97% from other races, and 3.47% from two or more races. The majority of the population was White. Latino or Hispanic made up 22.24% of the population. The family income was $72,585 and the median household income was $62,243. In the village, the median income for a family was $84,273 and the typical income for a household was $77,905.
The median income for men was $80,094, while it was $56,260 for women. The CDP’s per capita income was $66,334. 1.4% of people under the age of 18 and 0.4% of people 65 and over were among the 1.0% of families and 1.8% of the population living in poverty.
12,484 households were counted, with 33.9% housing children under the age of 18, married couples making up 61.5% of the households, single women making up 11.5%, and non-families making up 23.1%. Individuals made up 20.2% of all households, and 11.3% of them had a single person 65 years of age or older. 3.37 was the average family size while 2.91 was the average household size.
The Valley Stream CHSD serves as the common high school district for the numerous distinct elementary school districts (Valley Stream 13, 24, and 30 Union Free School Districts) that make up Valley Stream.
Furthermore, kids residing in some southern areas of the Village are designated to attend the schools of the Hewlett-Woodmere Union Free School District.
