Pauquaconsuk, which translates to “the place where we wade for thick, round-shelled clams” in Algonquian, is the hamlet’s original name. It was formerly called “Lonsefekwa” as well. It was “Wading in the River” that the early English colonists adopted.

Eight colonial families established the village known as Wading River, according to the oldest English documents. “The village’s location was thoughtfully selected. There was a stream large enough to generate water power and full of seafood, clean enough water to drink, rich enough soil to support vital crops, woods for food, fuel, and construction materials, terrain to provide shelter from the weather, and meadowland for its grass.”
