Shelter Island Heights is a picturesque hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) nestled within the Town of Shelter Island, Suffolk County, New York, USA. As per data from the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place (CDP) of Shelter Island Heights spans a total area of 5.6 square miles (15 km2). This includes 5.4 square miles (14 km2) of land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2), or approximately 4.97%, of water.

In the 2000 census, Shelter Island Heights had a population of 981 individuals, residing in 459 households and 302 families. The population density was 183.1 inhabitants per square mile (70.7/km2), with 1,374 housing units at an average density of 256.5 per square mile (99.0/km2).
The racial composition of the CDP was predominantly White (98.17%), with smaller percentages of African American (0.31%), Asian (0.41%), and individuals identifying with two or more races (1.12%). Hispanic or Latino individuals comprised 1.33% of the population.
Household demographics revealed that 16.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were married couples living together, and 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present. Additionally, 34.0% were classified as non-families, with 29.8% consisting of individuals and 20.7% comprising individuals aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.14, while the average family size was 2.62.
Age distribution showed that 14.9% of the population was under the age of 18, 3.1% were between 18 and 24, 14.3% were between 25 and 44, 31.9% were between 45 and 64, and 35.9% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 56 years, with a slightly higher proportion of females. For individuals aged 18 and over, there were 87.6 males for every 100 females, and for those aged 18 and over, there were 86.8 males for every 100 females.
Median household income was $65,446, and median family income was $76,162. Males had a median income of $46,750 compared to $37,955 for females. The per capita income was $34,083. Approximately 4.6% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.6% of those under age 18 and 2.9% of those age 65 or over.
