Beverley Square East and West, often known as Beverly Square, are two neighborhoods in Brooklyn’s Flatbush district. Located southwest of Prospect Park in what is now known as Victorian Flatbush, one of the largest concentrations of Victorian houses in the United States, they were built in the 1900s, mostly by Thomas Benton Ackerson, whose previous residence is in Beverley Square West.
The two neighborhoods run from Beverley Road in the north (south of Prospect Park South) to Cortelyou Road in the south. The cut for the BMT Brighton Line of the New York City Subway between Marlborough Road (East 15th Street) and East 16th Street marks the boundary between them. Beverley Square East extends east from there to East 19th Street, while Beverley Square West west from there to Stratford or Argyle Road.
Four of the development’s five north-south streets have been renamed with a British high tone. The Beverley Squares, like most of Victorian Flatbush, were constructed on country ground. Ackerson formed his development firm to build Beverley Square East, beginning construction in 1898 with a row of huge mansions on East 19th Street. Beverley Square West was built on Catherine Lott’s estate, which Ackerson purchased in 1901.
The Beverley Squares, like the rest of Victorian Flatbush, have been revitalized since the 1970s by an influx of new residents who appreciate the comparably low-cost homes in a variety of architectural styles, including fluted columns, stained glass, large porches, and turrets. Beverley Square West has an active citizens’ group that commemorated the neighborhood’s centennial in 2002 and is currently striving to gain recognition from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, but has been unsuccessful as of 2010. The Beverley Squares, along with Ditmas Park West, are now widely recognized as part of Ditmas Park.
Public School 139, the Alexine Fenty School, is located on Cortelyou Road between Rugby and Argyle Roads in Beverley Square West; several of the old residences were removed to make way for the school’s extension. The “mini-school” extension opened in 1989.
