  • WELCOME: Park Slope Village Brooklyn

Park Slope Village is a housing development located in the northwestern area of Park Slope, Brooklyn, with Gowanus to its west. Developed by the Fifth Avenue Committee and built by the Urban Housing Association, it was part of an urban renewal project initiated in 1982. The construction of 55 three-unit townhouses was finished in 1986.

  • History

Park Slope Village was constructed on a portion of condemned land formerly known as the Baltic Street Lot. In 1968, the Board of Education proposed clearing 6.5 acres surrounding P.S. 133 to create an “educational park,” which would include a new elementary and intermediate school. By 1970, 200 housing units, two factories (Crayola and Lovely Dolls), and several warehouses were demolished, leaving a vast vacant lot stretching from Fifth to Fourth Avenue, from Baltic across Butler to halfway to Douglass Street, with only the school remaining. Due to the financial crisis of 1975, the lot remained empty for years until the early 1980s when the Fifth Avenue Committee proposed a mixed-use plan for the area. This plan led to the development of Park Slope Village and a 27,500 square foot Key Food supermarket with parking for 120 cars.

  • Redevelopment

Plans for the mixed-use complex at 120 Fifth Avenue include a “public piazza,” which will reopen Butler Street to Fifth Avenue, but only to pedestrians. This connection of Park Slope Village to Fifth Avenue is expected to have significant impacts on the neighborhood. The estimated completion of the project is 2024.

Across Butler Street, redevelopment efforts began in 2003 when Fourth Avenue was rezoned to allow for taller buildings. In 2009, the original 300-seat P.S. 133, designed by C. B. J. Snyder, was demolished, and a new 960-seat “state-of-the-art” elementary school was built in its place. SBLM Architects designed the new school with elements that pay homage to the original Flemish Renaissance style structure.

In 2016, a permit was filed for the demolition of a Park Slope Village townhouse on the corner of Butler Street and Fourth Avenue (344 Butler), with plans for an upscale eight-story building with 11 residential units. Four years later, permits were filed for the demolition of three more townhouses in adjacent lots, to be replaced by a twelve-story, 32-unit luxury apartment building. These new additions to Park Slope Village are called The Butler Collection.
