Plandome is a community in Nassau County, New York, located on the North Shore of Long Island in the Town of North Hempstead. It is regarded as a component of the Manhasset-anchored Greater Manhasset region. 1,448 people were living there as of the 2020 census.
In 2009, Forbes listed the Incorporated Village of Plandome as the fifth most affluent U.S. community.
Plandome became a flag stop until 1909 when the Great Neck and Port Washington Railroad, a division of the Long Island Rail Road, constructed what is now known as the Port Washington Branch through the neighborhood in 1898. After a significant fire in January 1987, the original station building was rebuilt, and by 1990, the platform had been extended and renovated.
Although some houses, farmhouses, and mills had been constructed in the area in earlier decades, the Plandome Land Company started to build the village proper, and the Village of Plandome was founded in 1911. Plandome’s name, along with that of the nearby settlements Plandome Manor and Plandome Heights, comes from the Latin “Planus Domus,” which means “plain” or “level home.”
The village is 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) in total, of which 2.00% is water and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) is land, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Plandome is situated in both the wider Long Island Sound/Atlantic Ocean Watershed and the Manhasset Bay Watershed (parts of Plandome also drain to the Leeds Pond sub-watershed of the Manhasset Bay Watershed).
The highest point in Plandome is situated on Parkwoods Road near the Plandome–Flower Hill border in the southeast of the village, at a height of approximately 150 feet (46 meters), while the lowest point is Manhasset Bay, which is at sea level, according to the US Geological Survey and US Environmental Protection Agency.
One of the City of New York’s bedroom communities is called Plandome. Because of this, a sizable portion of its citizens go to and from New York for work.
The vast majority of the parcels in the village are zoned for single-family houses, giving the village its mostly residential character. There are no business areas located anywhere in the village since there are no parcels designated for business or commercial purposes.
