The earliest settlement in what we now know as Farmingville dates back to the late 18th century, initially known as Bald Hills and later as Mooney Ponds, before eventually adopting the name Farmingville, despite its unsuitable terrain for agriculture. The Keibel Family operated a 72-acre fruit and vegetable farm in the area from 1950 until 1982. Remarkably, it wasn’t until 1950 that Farmingville established its own post office.
Elijah Terry, the inaugural teacher in the local school, resided in a home constructed in 1823, adjacent to the Bald Hill Schoolhouse, which was built in 1850 and is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Bald Hill, positioned on the Ronkonkoma Moraine, marks one of the highest points on Long Island, signifying the halt of the glacier’s advance that shaped the island. Atop Bald Hill stands Vietnam Memorial Park, showcasing an obelisk-shaped monument adorned in red, white, and blue hues, inaugurated on November 11, 1991. Moreover, the Bald Hill Cultural Center encompasses the open-air Long Island Community Hospital Amphitheater and formerly hosted a ski area from 1965 to 1980.
Farmingville, nestled in central Long Island, boasts commendably low crime rates. According to the 2000 census, the community was home to 16,458 residents, residing in 5,041 households, and forming 4,229 families. The population density stood at 3,642.8 individuals per square mile (1,406.5/km²), with 5,170 housing units averaging approximately 1,144.3 units per square mile (441.8/km²).
In terms of racial composition, Farmingville comprised 79.9% White, 2.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 3.7% Asian, with 1.3% identifying as of two or more races, and 12.5% Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Household demographics indicated that 44.6% had children under 18 living with them, with 69.6% being married couples, 9.7% having a female householder with no husband present, and 16.1% being non-families. Individual households accounted for 11.8%, with 4.3% inhabited by individuals aged 65 or older. On average, households comprised 3.26 people, and families averaged 3.51.
Age-wise, Farmingville’s population distribution was as follows: 28.3% under 18, 8.1% aged 18 to 24, 34.3% aged 25 to 44, 22.5% aged 45 to 64, and 6.7% aged 65 or older, with a median age of 34 years. The gender ratio was slightly skewed, with approximately 101.5 males for every 100 females, and for those over 18, about 99.2 males for every 100 females.
Economically, the median household income was $69,148, with a median family income of $72,750. Median incomes for males and females were $50,075 and $31,434, respectively, while the per capita income stood at $23,755. Approximately 2.1% of families and 3.0% of the population lived below the poverty threshold, including 3.3% of those under age 18 and 3.9% of those age 65 or over.
The Bald Hill Cultural Center is home to the outdoor Long Island Community Hospital Amphitheater, providing a venue for various cultural and entertainment events. Additionally, the community boasts a residents association actively engaged in initiatives such as tree planting and landscaping efforts.
Brookhaven Town Hall is situated on the eastern side of Bald Hill within the community.
Farmingville hosts a variety of both public and private schools. Residents are served by the Sachem School District, with Sachem High School East conveniently situated adjacent to Brookhaven Town Hall on the eastern side of Bald Hill.
