According to data from the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place (CDP) spans a total area of 11.9 square miles (30.8 km2), of which 11.5 square miles (29.7 km2) is land and 0.42 square miles (1.1 km2), or 3.63%, is water.
Notably, the northern extent of Shirley is also referred to as East Yaphank. This area falls within the USPS ZIP code 11967, and the United States Postal Service accepts the names Shirley, Smith Point, and East Yaphank for this neighborhood, providing residents with multiple designations for their locality
Based on the 2000 census data, the Census-designated place (CDP) of Shirley had a population of 26,395 individuals residing in 7,353 households and 6,176 families. The population density was 2,282.5 inhabitants per square mile (881.3/km2), with 7,774 housing units at an average density of 698.7 per square mile (269.8/km2).
The racial composition of the CDP was predominantly White (89.69%), with notable percentages of African American (3.33%), Asian (1.23%), and individuals of other races (2.84%), along with those identifying with two or more races (2.56%). Hispanic or Latino individuals comprised 10.82% of the population.
Household demographics revealed that 47.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% were married couples living together, and 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present. Additionally, 16.0% were classified as non-families, with 11.6% consisting of individuals and 3.8% comprising individuals aged 65 or older. The average household size was 3.43, while the average family size was 3.67.
In terms of age distribution, 31.2% of the population was under the age of 18, with 9.7% aged 18 to 24, 31.9% aged 25 to 44, 21.0% aged 45 to 64, and 6.3% aged 65 or older. The median age was 32 years, with a slightly higher proportion of females (99.3 males for every 100 females). For individuals aged 18 and over, there were 96.9 males for every 100 females.
