Contact UsDebt relief options vs. bankruptcy on Long Island
Debt relief on Long Island is the set of legal tools that lower or clear what you owe short of bankruptcy: negotiating a lump-sum settlement, consolidating balances, and defending the collection lawsuit or garnishment already in motion. Since 1988 this firm has weighed all of them against your numbers first, and files bankruptcy only when it genuinely beats the alternatives.
The Law Offices of Ronald D. Weiss, P.C. stand apart from other Long Island debt relief attorneys. Since 1988 we have resolved consumer and commercial debt through a legal, interdisciplinary approach: negotiation, settlement, litigation defense, and, only when it wins, bankruptcy.
That approach means weighing every method side by side (negotiation, settlement, and lawsuit defense), then using real legal procedures, or the credible threat of them, to resolve nearly any kind of debt or monetary obligation.
At your free consultation, and at follow-up appointments if you retain us, we review the facts of your case, your goals, the applicable New York law, and the comparative advantages of each strategy. Then you, the client, decide which option best fits your goals.
Come in for a free consultation to review the legal debt solutions applicable to your financial challenges! I hope to see you soon.

Long Island debt relief attorney near me
Nassau and Suffolk bankruptcy cases are heard in the federal court at Central Islip, and debt lawsuits run through the county courts, which is where a template page pasting "Long Island" on top falls apart. We file in those rooms. You work with an attorney, not a call center, on a flat fee set in writing with no hidden costs, and the first consultation is free.
One client put it plainly after a New York State tax notice for 11,000 dollars: we settled it within three weeks, cut the balance by 95 percent, and set up a payment plan. That is the kind of result a lawyer-powered firm can reach when a settlement mill cannot. (Eren Obiz)
Every debt challenge is unique, and every plan we build is customized to that client's numbers, not a script.
Debt collection defense and wage garnishment on Long Island
Since 1988, defending Long Island paychecks, bank accounts, and homes across Nassau and Suffolk.
Debt negotiation and settlement on Long Island
Where the math supports it, we negotiate directly with creditors and collectors to settle balances for less than face value, often in one lump sum or a short plan. This is the work of a debt settlement attorney, and it carries a tax wrinkle worth knowing: forgiven debt over 600 dollars can come back as a 1099-C, and we plan for that up front.
Credit cards, personal loans, medical bills
Mortgage arrears, car loans, judgment liens
Commercial leases, business loans, goods & services disputes
Owed to the IRS, NYS, NYC, or other municipalities
Mortgage balances, residential lease arrears, real estate taxes
Student loans, SBA loans, COVID-related loans
We handle the full menu: credit cards, medical bills, personal loans, old auto deficiencies, and business debt. When settlement and defense cannot get there, a Long Island bankruptcy lawyer on our team can erase or reorganize what is left, and a Long Island foreclosure lawyer can defend the home.
"Our legal consultations are free, but our advice may be invaluable."
About the Firm
Since 1988, the Law Offices of Ronald D. Weiss, P.C. have focused on resolving the debts of individuals and businesses across Long Island and New York City. Our attorneys and staff are experienced, knowledgeable, and compassionate, and we understand the pressure debt puts on Nassau and Suffolk families.
Our law offices are among the largest and oldest law firms on Long Island and in the New York City areas dealing with consumer and small business debt.
We have argued and won cases on appeal, and our attorneys stay current on the New York consumer-debt laws that decide these matters, including the Consumer Credit Fairness Act, so Long Island clients get a defense built on the rules as they stand today.
Our active law offices, located in Melville (our main office), Queens, Brooklyn, Mineola, and Bohemia, are convenient, comfortable, and technologically advanced.
Founder Ronald D. Weiss started the firm in 1988. He graduated from New York University School of Law in 1988 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1989. Ron, like our other attorneys, is admitted to the federal courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York and to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
Ron began his career in debt resolution while still in law school, earning a prestigious Bankruptcy Scholarship that allowed him to publish bankruptcy law articles under Professor of Bankruptcy Law Lawrence P. King, and to clerk for prominent bankruptcy judge Prudence B. Abrams in the Southern District of New York.

Call 888-4-U-NEW-STARTFrequently Asked Questions
Usually, yes. Settlement, negotiation, consolidation, and lawsuit defense resolve many debts with no filing at all, and for most clients we exhaust those routes before bankruptcy is ever discussed. The right option depends on the type of debt, the amount, your income, and your goals, which is why we start every case with a free strategy consultation rather than recommending one tool for everyone.
Do not ignore it, and do not admit the debt. Answering the complaint on time preserves every defense, including New York's three-year deadline to sue under the Consumer Credit Fairness Act, and it stops the automatic default judgment that leads straight to a garnishment. Once we appear, the collector has to prove it actually owns the debt, and many cannot.
The lesser of 10 percent of your gross pay or 25 percent of your disposable pay, and never so much that you drop below 30 times the minimum wage for the week. Anything beyond that is challengeable, and exempt income (Social Security and many benefits) cannot be touched at all. If a garnishment or a frozen bank account is already taking too much, we move to reduce or vacate it and claim every exemption you are owed.
There is usually a short-term dip, but it is far milder than the long slide of ongoing default, judgments, and garnishment. Settled accounts are reported as settled for less than the full balance and then marked closed, rather than staying perpetually delinquent, so once the debt is resolved the score can start climbing again instead of sinking. Many of our clients see it rebound within 12 to 24 months. Call 888-4-U-NEW-START to discuss your specific situation.
It can. Forgiven debt over 600 dollars may be reported to the IRS on a 1099-C as income. We factor that in before you agree to any settlement, and insolvency exclusions often reduce or erase the tax, which is exactly the kind of detail a lawyer plans for and a settlement mill does not.
It depends on the tool, but here is the usual arc. Weeks 1 to 2: a free consultation, where we halt collector contact and answer any pending lawsuit. Months 1 to 6: we negotiate settlements or set up consolidation while defending anything that has been filed. Months 6 to 24: balances close out and your credit begins to climb again. Faster paths exist when a single account is the whole problem, and longer ones when litigation is contested.
At the Law Offices of Ronald D. Weiss, P.C., we offer free initial consultations and transparent, flat-fee pricing with no hidden costs. The fee depends on the type of debt and the strategy required: a straightforward settlement costs less than contested litigation. We also offer flexible payment plans, because most clients come to us precisely when money is tight. Contact us at 888-4-U-NEW-START for a clear picture of what your specific situation will involve.
