Contact UsOur Approach
We are a Long Island law firm, with offices throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties and New York City, helping individuals and businesses legally eliminate, reduce, reorganize, or defend debt and almost any monetary obligation.
The Law Offices of Ronald D. Weiss, P.C. stand apart from other Long Island debt relief attorneys. Since our founding in 1993, we have been smartly and creatively resolving consumer and commercial debt through a legal, interdisciplinary approach we call Legal Debt Solutions.
Legal Debt Solutions means simultaneously evaluating and comparing alternative legal methods — bankruptcy, litigation, and negotiation — then using actual legal procedures (or the credible threat of them) to resolve nearly any kind of debt, dispute, or monetary obligation.
At your initial free legal consultation, and at follow-up option appointments if you retain us, we review the facts of your case, your goals, the applicable law, and the comparative advantages of each available legal strategy. Then we personalize the process: you, the client, decide which option(s) best fit your goals.
Come in for a free consultation to review the legal debt solutions applicable to your financial challenges! I hope to see you soon.

Our attorneys and staff are experienced, knowledgeable, and compassionate — and we understand the pressure debt puts on Long Island families.
Our law offices are among the largest and oldest law firms on Long Island and in the New York City areas dealing with consumer and small business debt.
We have won several landmark appeal cases, and members of our staff contributed to the drafting of the Foreclosure Abuse Prevention Act — the important New York State law passed on December 30, 2022, addressing the foreclosure statute of limitations.

Founder Ronald D. Weiss started the firm in 1993. He graduated from New York University School of Law in 1988 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1989. Ron, like our other attorneys, is admitted to the federal courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, and also to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and the State of Connecticut.
Ron began his career in debt resolution while still in law school, earning a prestigious Bankruptcy Scholarship that allowed him to publish bankruptcy law articles under Professor of Bankruptcy Law Lawrence P. King, and to clerk for prominent bankruptcy judge Prudence B. Abrams in the Southern District of New York.

“Debt relief” is the umbrella term for any legal strategy that eliminates, reduces, or restructures what you owe. At our Long Island offices we evaluate every available path for your specific situation: negotiating directly with creditors to reduce balances, defending against creditor lawsuits, modifying mortgages, restructuring through formal legal filings, and using statute-of-limitations defenses on time-barred debt. The right option depends on the type of debt, the amount, your income, and your goals — which is why we start every case with a free strategy consultation rather than recommending one tool for everyone.
Yes — for many Long Island residents, bankruptcy is the last option on the menu, not the first. We routinely resolve credit card debt, personal loans, medical bills, and even business debts through direct negotiation, structured settlements, and litigation defense. Creditors often accept significantly less than the full balance because they understand the alternative — a contested lawsuit or a bankruptcy filing — could leave them with nothing. Our attorneys will tell you honestly whether a non-bankruptcy path is realistic for your situation before recommending one.
We handle nearly every category of consumer and small-business debt: credit card balances, personal and signature loans, medical bills, judgments and collection lawsuits, repossession deficiency balances, mortgage arrears, business obligations, and certain tax debts. Secured debts like mortgages and auto loans require different strategies than unsecured debts because the creditor has collateral to take if you default. During your free consultation we’ll map every debt you owe to the legal tool that fits it best, then build a coordinated plan instead of working one account at a time.
Debt settlement is the process of negotiating with a creditor to accept less than the full balance in exchange for resolving the account. Several New York factors shape that conversation: the 2021 update to the state’s statute of limitations means most consumer debts can only be sued on for three years; charged-off accounts often sell for pennies on the dollar to debt buyers; and creditors generally prefer a guaranteed lump-sum or structured payment over the cost and risk of a lawsuit. Forgiven debt over $600 may also be reported to the IRS as taxable income, so we walk you through the tax implications before any deal is finalized. Call 888-4-U-NEW-START to discuss your specific situation.
Most forms of debt relief have a short-term credit impact, but the more important question is what you’re comparing it to. Continued default, charged-off accounts, judgments, and wage garnishments cause far greater long-term damage than a structured resolution. Settled debts are typically reported as “settled for less than full balance” — a negative mark, but the account is marked closed rather than perpetually delinquent, and the score recovers as you rebuild. Many of our clients see their scores rebound within 12 to 24 months once their debts are actually resolved.
Yes — until a debt is formally settled or discharged, creditors retain the right to file collection lawsuits, and some do. The advantage of having an attorney representing you is that creditors must direct contact through our office, which often slows aggressive collection and forces them to negotiate seriously. If a lawsuit has already been filed, we defend it directly: challenging the creditor’s standing, raising statute-of-limitations defenses, demanding proof of the original contract, and negotiating from a position of leverage. We also handle wage garnishments and bank levies that may already be in motion.
At The Law Office of Ronald D. Weiss, P.C., we offer free initial consultations and transparent pricing with no hidden fees. The cost varies depending on the type of debt, the strategy required, and the complexity of your case — straightforward settlements cost less than contested litigation. We also offer flexible payment plans, because most clients are coming to us precisely because money is tight. Contact us at 888-4-U-NEW-START for a clear picture of what your specific situation will involve.
