Baldwin is a town in the United States state of New York’s Chemung County. 818 people were counted in the population in 2020. Two of the area’s original settlers, Thomas and Waterman Baldwin, are honored in the town’s name. The town lies to Elmira’s east. The Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area includes it.
Although hunters and trappers most certainly traveled through the region in the past, Baldwin was first established in 1813, with Charles and Warren Granger recognized as the region’s first white residents. The brothers established their roots in what would eventually become North Chemung, then known as “Hammond Corners”. The journey to their new residence would have been challenging because of the dense, uninhabited forest, ravines, and swamps covered in dense underbrush.
Henry Tice arrived in Hammond Corners with his family in 1815, shortly after the Granger brothers, from Ulster County in downstate New York. Jason Hammond and his five sons, Elisha, James, Robert, David, and Cornelius, arrived in 1815 as well. Many more New England families arrived in the years that followed, including Peter McCumber, for whom the neighborhood known as “McCumber Corners” is called. The Whitakers, Collisions, Browns, Elstons, Drakes, and numerous more families were among the others. Many of these families still maintain close ties to or reside in the area.
In 1818, the first church organization was established, and worship sessions were conducted in the homes of individual members. The community’s first church serving all religions wasn’t constructed until 1852.
