The Five Towns, a section of Long Island’s South Shore, is home to the Incorporated Village of Cedarhurst.

Ocean Point was the original name of Cedarhurst. When rail service began in 1869, more individuals visited the region, particularly the Rockaway Hunting Club, which was established in Cedarhurst in 1878. In 1884, a post office was opened, and Ocean Point was renamed Cedarhurst, in part due to the Hunt Club’s influence. A grove of trees that formerly stood where the post office now stands is referenced in the name Cedarhurst.
The primary business center in the neighborhood, Central Avenue, was known for many years as Long Island’s Rodeo Drive, drawing discerning customers from all over the area with its premium stores and boutiques. Numerous shops and eateries in the area now serve the needs of the growing Orthodox Jewish community. Many of the businesses on the street are closed on Saturdays since observant Jews do not shop on the Jewish Sabbath. This reduces foot traffic for the stores that are open on Saturdays.
A fire that started at the Cedarhurst Shoppes on November 22, 2019, severely damaged five different kinds of businesses.
