Central Islip is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, in the United States. It is sometimes referred to locally by its initials, CI. The 2010 census found 34,450 people living there.
The region that is now Central Islip was inhabited by the Secatogue tribe of Algonquin native Americans before European settlers arrived.
The Suffolk County Station was opened when the Long Island Rail Road’s eastward extension arrived in the region in 1842. The Suffolk County Station evolved into the neighborhood’s commercial hub. The Central Islip Psychiatric Center first opened its doors in 1889. It was housing more than 10,000 patients by 1955. In 1996, it closed.
With the opening of new government buildings, retail establishments, and residential complexes, Central Islip saw a revival in the middle of the 1990s. The country’s second-largest federal courthouse complex, according to claims, opened for business. on a portion of the 788-acre (3.19 km2) property of the former Central Islip Psychiatric Center. The Long Island Ducks, an independent baseball team, opened their new stadium in 2000.

The CDP is all land, with a total area of 7.1 square miles (18.4 km2), according to the US Census Bureau.
The CDP was home to 34,450 people, 8,792 households, and 6,813 families as of the 2010 census. There were 4,398.2 people per square mile (1,698.2/km2) in the population. At an average density of 1,264.9 per square mile (488.4/km2), there were 9,189 dwelling units. According to the US Census, the racial composition of the CDP was 25.0% African American, 3.4% Asian, 0.9% other, and 5.9% two or more races. The percentage of Latinos, of any race, who were Hispanic was 52.1%. The population that was born abroad made up 34.7% of the total.
There were 8,792 homes, of which 26.6% included children under the age of 18, 8.0% had individuals under the age of 5, 3.5% consisted of married couples cohabiting, 17.7% included a female householder living alone, and 22.5% did not belong to a family. Individuals made up 16.8% of all households, and those 65 years of age or more accounted for 8.5% of single-person households. 3.56 was the average size of a household, and 3.87 was the average size of a family.
The population of the CDP was dispersed, with 7.4% being 65 years of age or older, 11.0% being between the ages of 18 and 24, 32.5% being between the ages of 25 and 44, and 19.8% being between the ages of 45 and 64. The age median was thirty-two. There were 97.5 men for every 100 females. There were 93.3 males for every 100 girls over the age of 18.
In the CDP, the average household income was $55,504 and the average family income was $57,252. The median salary for men was $35,187 while it was $27,842 for women. In the CDP, the per capita income was $17,910. 11.4% of people, including 15.8% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and over, lived in poverty, making up about 8.3% of households.
