East Rockaway is a village in Nassau County, New York, situated on the southern tip of Long Island. 9,818 people were counted in the 2010 census.
At the border of the Rockaway Peninsula Proper in the town of Hempstead, close to Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett, Rockville Centre, Lynbrook, and Oceanside, is the Incorporated Village of East Rockaway. It is the last neighborhood before Five Towns officially begins, though some people now consider affluent areas of East Rockaway to be a part of Five Towns. Just 24 miles (15 km) separate the inner suburb of East Rockaway from Manhattan’s core.
The village, which was once known as Near Rockaway, was established as a shipping and commerce hub for Long Island’s South Shore. Ships liked the village’s position because of its deep inland waterways. Eventually, in 1688, Joseph Haviland received a land grant and constructed a grist mill on the Mill River. In 1998, Memorial Park’s Haviland-Davison Grist Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Later, bread was made for the local community by purchasing an oven. Over the years, the community continued to thrive in shipping and milling even after multiple land sales.
In 1869, the village was renamed East Rockaway.
When Floyd Johnson was president in 1900, the community was formed.
The settlement is 1.03 square miles (2.7 km2) in total, of which 1.02 square miles (2.6 km2) are land and 0.01 square miles (0.026 km2) are water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
10,414 people, 3,926 households, and 2,787 families called the village home as of the 2000 census. The population density was 3,933.5/km^, or 10,187.6 people per square mile. At an average density of 3,916.0 per square mile (1,512.0/km2), there were 4,003 housing units. With 95.64% of its population being White, 0.61% African American, 0.03% Native American, 1.71% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races, the community was racially composed. Any race that was Hispanic or Latino made up 5.79% of the population.
There were 3,926 households, of which 32.6% included children under the age of 18, married couples made up 59.4% of the household, single women made up 8.8%, and non-families made up 29.0%. Individuals made up 25.9% of all households, and 11.2% of them had a single person 65 years of age or older. The mean dimensions of households were 2.62 and families were 3.20 on average.
The population of the village was dispersed, with 6.1% being between the ages of 18 and 24, 30.6% being between the ages of 25 and 44, 24.1% being between the ages of 45 and 64, and 15.4% being 65 or older.
The secondary school has about 100 pupils in each grade. The sports teams are known as “The Rocks.” The unique orange and black color scheme is used for all high school varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen teams. In the sports of football, cross country, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, and track and field, East Rockaway High School fields competitive teams. In addition to these teams, East Rockaway forms teams by combining with schools in the Malverne school system. Tennis, lacrosse, and soccer are a few of these. In the town, school musicals and the interclass rivalry known as “Rock Rivalry” are highly favored.
