Glen Oaks is the easternmost neighborhood in Queens, part of Community Board 13, and it shares its border with Nassau County to the east.

Glen Oaks features a line of hills along its northern edge, which are remnants of the terminal moraine from the last glacial period. These hills include the highest point in Queens, reaching 258.2 feet (78.7 m) above sea level. The southern part of Glen Oaks is characterized by a glacial outwash plain.
The postal ZIP Code zones for Glen Oaks do not strictly adhere to political boundaries and even extend across the city line. The easternmost part of the neighborhood falls within the 11040 ZIP code, addressed as New Hyde Park. The North Shore Towers complex, located in the northernmost part of the neighborhood, is in the 11005 ZIP code and addressed as Floral Park. The portion of Glen Oaks west of Little Neck Parkway, excluding the Queens County Farm Museum, is in the 11426 ZIP code and addressed as Bellerose. The central part of the neighborhood falls within the 11004 ZIP code, which may be addressed as either Glen Oaks or Floral Park. However, due to the ZIP codes crossing the city line, they cannot be solely relied upon to determine sales tax rates, leading to challenges for area residents.

Additionally, there is a 2-acre (8,100 m2) playground located at Little Neck Parkway and 72nd Avenue, adjacent to P.S. 186. South of the playground on Little Neck Parkway lies the Queens County Farm Museum, spanning 47.7 acres (19.3 ha). The farm museum recreates the historic agricultural phase of the county and features a variety of farm animals and antique farming equipment.
The Long Island Jewish Medical Center, spanning 48 acres (19 ha) and with 548 beds, is situated within Glen Oaks and stands as one of the largest medical facilities on Long Island.
On December 14, 2020, Sandra Lindsay, a critical care nurse in Glen Oaks, etched her name in history as the first person in the United States to receive the Coronavirus Vaccine.
Glen Oaks is encompassed by two public elementary (K-5) school zones: P.S. 186 and P.S. 115. Upon graduation from these schools, students move on to attend middle school (grades 6-8) at M.S. 172. Additionally, Our Lady of the Snows, a Roman Catholic school, offers an alternative educational path for grades K-8.
In 2004, a significant development occurred with the opening of the Frank A. Padavan campus in western Glen Oaks, previously part of the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center. This campus comprises The Queens High School of Teaching along with two elementary/intermediate (grades K-8) schools: P.S./I.S. 208 and P.S./I.S. 266. Notably, P.S./I.S. 266 caters to students across District 26, selected through a lottery system from applicants. However, P.S./I.S. 208 does not serve Glen Oaks students directly, as its zone includes only a small section of Glen Oaks west of Commonwealth Boulevard, which is not primarily residential. Schools within District 26 have consistently ranked among the top in the NYC public school system.
Several institutions located on or near Union Turnpike are associated with Glen Oaks, although they are technically situated outside its borders. For instance, the Bellerose Jewish Center, the Glen Oaks branch of the Queens Library, and Glen Oaks School (P.S. 115) are all located in the Floral Park neighborhood. Similarly, M.S. 172 and Our Lady of the Snows are situated outside Glen Oaks. In contrast, P.S. 186, named Castlewood School, is centrally located within Glen Oaks. Additionally, the Queens County Farm, although bearing the Glen Oaks/Floral Park zip code, is positioned in the heart of Glen Oaks, with operational oversight provided by the Colonial Farmhouse Restoration Society of Bellerose.
