LeFrak City, named after its developer, the LeFrak Organization (established by Samuel J. LeFrak), was built between 1962 and 1971 largely for working- and middle-class families who wanted modern amenities but couldn’t afford or didn’t want to live in Manhattan.The facility was built atop Horse Brook, a small creek that originally ran through Elmhurst along the LIE. The ground on which LeFrak City is located was originally undeveloped marshland, and the megablocks of LeFrak City are a reminder of the site’s lack of development.
