The spring for Hook Creek originates under the Green Acres Mall, constructed in 1956 on the northern part of Curtiss Airfield. The creek was engineered and emerges on the Queens side in nearby Hook Creek Park before traversing 300 acres (120 ha) of wetlands to Jamaica Bay, passing between the two hamlets.
In 1963, as part of planning New York state’s parkways, Parks Commissioner Robert Moses utilized eminent domain to acquire sections of Hook Creek for a proposed extension of the Nassau Expressway. The homes seized were demolished, but the extension was never realized. Despite this, there have been ongoing plans to complete the expressway.
In 2007, the city began installing a sanitary sewer system in Warnerville and neighboring Meadowmere due to flooding of some septic tanks into Jamaica Bay. Rising sea levels and increased storm surges, exemplified by Hurricane Sandy, devastated the communities, resulting in the loss of many waterfront homes. Residents sought refuge in the volunteer firehouse in Meadowmere Park for months. While streets had been raised by 3 to 4 feet (0.91 to 1.22 m), this was insufficient to withstand Sandy’s surges, which submerged most homes under 5 feet (1.5 m) of water. Consequently, many homes are being elevated in Meadowmere Park, and the wooden bridge will be reinforced and widened to accommodate emergency vehicles. Even during normal weather conditions, the streets in Meadowmere experience flooding with each high tide.
In contrast to the typical street naming convention in Queens, Meadowmere has three roads simply named 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Streets. These streets are separated from the Five Towns Shopping Center by Rockaway Boulevard.
Rockaway Boulevard, one of the major roads in Queens, extends through Rosedale to Meadowmere. In Meadowmere, traffic encounters two traffic signals, marking the boundary between southeast Queens and Lawrence.
Meadowmere Park bridge
The bridge and hamlet of Meadowmere Park constitute the only part of Nassau County located west of Queens. Positioned along the primary east-west flight path to John F. Kennedy International Airport’s runway, the Hook Creek Bridge is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) away from the airport. By 1969, the bridge required repairs. In 2016, $2.4 million in grant funding was secured for the repair of the 110-year-old footbridge, and in 2018, the Hempstead town board approved the first contract of $243,615 for the project. The redesigned bridge will not only address maintenance issues but also provide emergency access for ambulances, complementing the narrow and meandering East Avenue, the sole road leading to the small island.
However, opposition to the replacement has hindered the upgrade process. While residents advocate for fixing the current bridge, Nassau town supervisors argue that the grants are intended for replacement and enhancing vehicular access.
Warnerville
Warnerville, situated adjacent to Meadowmere, is bordered by Jamaica Bay on three sides, positioned just southeast of John F. Kennedy Airport. Comprising merely three streets, Warnerville is delineated by Rockaway Boulevard on its eastern boundary.
