Moriches is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) situated in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 2,838.
The name “Moriches” originates from Meritces, a Native American who owned land on Moriches Neck. A prominent feature of the community was the Jurgielewicz Duck Farm, established in 1919 along the Forge River’s edge. At its height, the 65-acre farm, situated near the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, boasted being America’s largest free-range duck operation, raising up to one million Pekin ducks annually. However, in 2011, it filed for bankruptcy and subsequently closed its operations in August of the same year.
According to data from the United States Census Bureau, the CDP covers a total area of 2.3 square miles (5.9 km2), of which 2.0 square miles (5.3 km2) is land and 0.23 square miles (0.6 km2), equivalent to 9.99% of the total area, is water.
According to the 2000 census, Moriches had a population of 2,319 people residing in 1,116 households and 669 families. The population density was 1,190.6 inhabitants per square mile (459.7/km2), with 1,212 housing units at an average density of 622.3 per square mile (240.3/km2). The racial composition of the CDP was 94.91% White, 1.25% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.81% Asian, 0.65% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.97% of the population.
In terms of household demographics, 13.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. Additionally, 30.9% of all households were comprised of individuals, and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05, and the average family size was 2.56.
The population distribution across age groups was as follows: 11.5% under the age of 18, 6.4% between 18 and 24, 31.4% between 25 and 44, 27.5% between 45 and 64, and 23.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. There were slightly more males than females, with a ratio of 100.8 males for every 100 females.
Regarding income, the median household income was $63,672, and the median family income was $74,659. Males had a median income of $51,205 compared to $35,950 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $34,038. Approximately 2.9% of families and 5.5% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 6.4% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
