Isaac Underhill Willets held one of the biggest farms in the region in the 1800s.
In order to secure and preserve home rule privileges and to avoid the Town of North Hempstead, which is located in adjacent Manhasset, from imposing taxes on the property, the village was founded in 1929 as a tax haven. The village of North Hills was given its name because it is situated in the northern region of Nassau County and because the surrounding terrain is highly steep.
As part of a master plan, North Hills proposed rezoning and downzoning significant areas of the village in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. A shopping mall, office and commercial buildings, condominiums, and cluster homes were among the uses for which the area was to be downzoned and rezoned. Furthermore, the rezoning would permit the construction of skyscrapers up to 85 feet (26 meters) in height.

North Hills is traversed by the Northern State Parkway and the Long Island Expressway (Interstate 495).

Of the 1,808 homes, 19.0% included children under the age of 18, 73.5% were made up of married couples, 3.8% included a female householder living alone, and 21.2% were not families. Individuals made up 18.1% of all households, and people 65 years of age or older lived alone in 9.2% of them. The mean dimensions of households and families were 2.37 and 2.66, respectively.

Marvin Natiss is the mayor of North Hills, Dennis Sgambati is the deputy mayor, and Elliott Arnold, Gail Cohen, and Phyllis Lentini are the village trustees as of June 2021.
