Plainview is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New York, USA, close to the North Shore of Long Island. The CDP had 27,100 residents as of 2020. The ZIP code for the Plainview post office is 11803.
Plainview shares a water district, fire station, library, and school system with Old Bethpage, a nearby hamlet. The Second Precinct of the Nassau County Police Department provides law enforcement for the communities.
The founding of Plainview can be traced back to Welsh emigrant Robert Williams’ purchase of nearby land in 1648. The Moscopas, which means “hole of dirt and water” to the nearby Native Americans, was a tiny pond that made the region attractive for farming. Thomas Powell acquired the remaining land in the region in 1695 as part of the Bethpage Purchase. The community became known as “Manetto Hill” because the term “Mannatto Hill” was already mentioned in the 1695 Bethpage Purchase document. The Native American word for “god” or “spirit” was manitou.
Local farmland saw a surge following the Long Island Rail Road’s debut in nearby Hicksville in 1837. Manetto Hill inhabitants petitioned the USPS in 1885 for a local post office, but their request was denied because, based on many accounts, an identical name was already in use upstate. From the top of the Manetto Hills, the hamlet was dubbed “Plainview” because of the view over the Hempstead Plains.

The United States Census Bureau estimates that the CDP is 5.7 square miles (15 km2) in total size. Plainview is located on the Nassau County side of the Suffolk County boundary. The hamlets of Bethpage, Hicksville, Old Bethpage, Syosset, and Woodbury are its neighbors on the Nassau side. Its main boundary on the Suffolk side is Melville, though it also borders West Hills.
The CDP was home to 26,973 people, 8,923 households, and 7,243 families as of the 2020 census. There were 26,217 people living there per square mile (10,122/km2). 9,281 dwelling units were present. The CDP’s racial composition was 2.7% from more than one race, 19.9% Asian, and 74.8% White. Latino or Hispanic, regardless of race, made up 4.6% of the population. Like many other northern Nassau County communities, Plainview has historically had a sizable Jewish population. In recent years, however, the area has seen an astounding increase in the number of East Asian residents.
Of the 8,963 homes, 36.5% included children under the age of 18, and 73.0% were made up of married couples living together. those living alone made up 16.3% of all households, while those 65 years of age or older made up 11.9% of all homes. The mean dimensions of households were 2.87 and families were 3.24 on average. The population of the CDP was distributed, with 5.5% being between the ages of 18 and 24, 26.0% being between the ages of 25 and 44, 26.5% being between the ages of 45 and 64, and 17.0% being 65 or older.
Plainview is primarily a suburban community, although it also contains a huge number of shopping complexes and strip malls, as well as around 330 acres of commercial real estate divided among three office parks. The two most prominent tenants, with headquarters located there, are Veeco and Aeroflex (now Cobham).
Plainview is home to several houses of worship.
There are numerous Jewish communities in Plainview. Young Israel of Plainview and the Plainview Synagogue are both Orthodox. Manetto Hill Jewish Center and Plainview Jewish Center are both Conservative. Reformed is the Temple Chaverim.
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Plainview Reformed Church, St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, Plainview United Methodist Church (also called the Korean United Methodist Church), and Episcopal Church of St. Margaret are among the churches. The latter has a cemetery in its backwoods.
Furthermore, there is the Sikh temple known as the Guru Gobind Singh Sikh Center, Inc. The Bethel United Pentecostal Church used to be housed in the structure of this temple. Furthermore, a Messianic temple called Beth Yeshua/Olive Tree Congregation is located in Plainview.
Students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 are served by the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. There are four elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school in this district. All except one of these schools are situated in Plainview.
The Bethpage Union Free School District and the Syosset Central School District both serve small portions of Plainview.
Plainview is home to several private schools, and Farmingdale State College is situated in Farmingdale, which is close by.
