There used to be a railroad station in the hamlet on the Central Branch of the Long Island Rail Road called South Farmingdale. It had been operating from 1873 until 1898, when it closed. It reopened in 1936 and closed once more in 1972.

Between the 1990 and 2000 censuses, the CDP added land.
Drainage and topography
The hamlet of South Farmingdale has mostly flat terrain because it is situated on a level outwash plain. Furthermore, South Farmingdale is part of the broader Long Island Sound/Atlantic Ocean Watershed and is divided between the drainage basins of Seaford Creek and Massapequa Creek.\

Census of 2010
In the CDP, there were 14,486 residents as of the 2010 census. Ninety-one percent of the CDP’s population was White. The percentages of non-Hispanic White people are 83%, 1.4% African American, 0.1% Native American, 4.5% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 2.2% Other, and 1.7% Two or More Races. The percentage of Latinos, or Hispanics, of any race was 10%.
2020 census
The hamlet had 14,345 residents at the time of the 2020 census. Census 2000 The CDP had 15,061 residents at the time of the 2000 census, living in 4,899 homes and 4,095 families. There were 6,886.0 people per square mile (2,658.7/km2) at that population density. At an average density of 2,263.2 per square mile (873.8/km2), there were 4,950 dwelling units. In terms of race, the CDP was made up of 93.01% White people, 0.79% African Americans, 0.08% Native Americans, 3.18% Asian people, 0.03% Pacific Islanders, 1.85% people of other races, and 1.07% people of five or more races. 5.90% of people identified as Hispanic or Latino, regardless of race.
Of the 4,899 homes, 36.3% included children under the age of 18, 69.9% consisted of married couples living together, 10.5% included a female householder living alone, and 16.4% did not belong to a family. Individuals made up 13.5% of all households, and 7.2% of them had a single person 65 years of age or older. The average size of a family was 3.37, while the average size of a household was 3.07.
The age breakdown was as follows: 16.2% were 65 years of age or more, 30.8% were between the ages of 25 and 44, 6.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24, and 25.1% were under the age of 18. It was 38 years old on average. There were 96.5 men for every 100 females. There were 91.0 men for every 100 girls over the age of 18.
The median income for a family was $76,049, while the median income for a household was $71,168. The median income for men was $52,290 while it was $36,475 for women. In the CDP, the per capita income was $25,927. 2.8% of people and 2.5% of households lived in poverty; this group included 2.9% of people over 65 and 4.4% of people under the age of 18.

The Farmingdale Union Free School District provides education for South Farmingdale residents.
Among the schools in the district are Saltzman East Memorial in Suffolk County, Woodward Parkway School, Howitt Middle School, Northside Elementary School, and Albany Avenue Elementary School in North Massepequa.
District Libraries
The Farmingdale Public Library serves the South Farmingdale neighborhood, which is contained within the confines of the Farmingdale Library District.

Road
Merritts Road, Motor Avenue, and the Southern State Parkway are some of the main thoroughfares in South Farmingdale.
Rail
The hamlet is not home to any Long Island Rail Road stations, but its northern boundary is formed by the LIRR’s Central Branch. Farmingdale on the Ronkonkoma Branch and Massapequa Park on the Babylon Branch are the closest stations to the hamlet.
Furthermore, the South Farmingdale station, which closed in the 1970s, was formerly situated within the hamlet on the Central Branch. Mile-a-Minute was situated along this section of the Central Branch. When Murphy rode a bicycle a mile behind a train in less than a minute in 1899, he broke the record.
