Speonk (/ˈspiːɒŋk/, SPEE-ongk) is a hamlet situated in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County, New York, United States.
As early as 1712, meadows in Speonk were leased to cattle owners from Southampton. Most of the early residents migrated west from Southampton and Bridgehampton in the 1740s, establishing farms and clearing the forests. In the 1880s, duck farms thrived in Speonk, although few survived past the turn of the century. The name “Speonk” was derived from a Native American word meaning “high place.” An 1897 Long Island Rail Road catalog mentioned Speonk, noting that the name “certainly sounds like the call of a frog.” Railroad conductors often emphasized the name when announcing it as the next station. Some residents advocated for changing the name to Remsenburg, after prominent resident Charles Remsen donated a new Presbyterian Church. Today, both names are still in use, each referring to different areas of the community.
Speonk is situated at geographic coordinates 40° 49′ 10″ North, 72° 42′ 27″ West (40.819599, -72.707603). The ZIP Code for Speonk is 11972.
