Strongs Neck, located just south of Long Island Sound in Suffolk County, New York, USA, is a hamlet and peninsula situated on the North Shore of Long Island. Part of the Town of Brookhaven, census data for Strongs Neck is included in Setauket-East Setauket, New York.
Originally known as Little Neck, Strongs Neck gained historical significance in the 17th century as the residence of William “Tangier” Smith, who, through acquisitions and land grants, owned a vast portion of Brookhaven. His land stretched from Shirley on the Atlantic Ocean in the southwest to Riverhead in the northeast, encompassing all of Fire Island.
Anna, the great-granddaughter of William “Tangier” Smith and a member of the Setauket Spy Ring during the American Revolution, married Selah Strong, leading to the renaming of the neck to Strong’s Neck. Anna played a crucial role in coordinating communication among the spies, using the color of clothes hung on her clothesline on Strong’s Neck as a signal.
The Strong family retains ownership of the original Smith mansion site, where William “Tangier” Smith and many of his descendants are interred.
