Stuyvesant, commonly referred to as Bed-Stuy, is a neighborhood located in the northern part of Brooklyn, New York City. Its boundaries are Flushing Avenue to the north (adjacent to Williamsburg), Classon Avenue to the west (bordering Clinton Hill), Broadway to the east (bordering Bushwick and East New York), and Atlantic Avenue to the south (bordering Crown Heights and Brownsville). The primary commercial thoroughfare in the area is Fulton Street, which stretches east to west across the neighborhood and intersects with major north-south streets like Bedford Avenue, Nostrand Avenue, and Stuyvesant Avenue. Bedford-Stuyvesant comprises four distinct sub-neighborhoods: Bedford, Stuyvesant Heights, Ocean Hill, and Weeksville (which is also part of Crown Heights). Additionally, a portion of Clinton Hill was historically considered part of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Bedford is situated in Bedford-Stuyvesant’s westernmost region. It was the first settlement east of Brooklyn Village prior to the American Revolutionary War. It was once a part of the ancient Bedford settlement, which had its center at the intersection of Fulton Street and Bedford Avenue. The Landmarks Preservation Commission states that the neighborhood “extends from just east of Bedford Avenue eastward to Tompkins Avenue, and from Monroe Street on the north to Macon Street and Verona Place on the south.” Clinton Hill, Crown Heights, and Williamsburg are all close by Bedford.
