Vernon Valley, situated in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, USA, is a quaint hamlet positioned at the southeast edge of the incorporated Village of Northport. It falls under the Northport postal zone and is part of the census-designated place of East Northport.
The name “Vernon Valley” not only denotes this specific area but is also commonly used to describe the entire hollow or valley extending southward from this point for about 1.5 miles until reaching East Northport. Coincidentally, the main thoroughfare in this area is named “Vernon Valley Road.” Initially, what is now known as the St. Paul’s Lutheran School once served as The Vernon Valley Inn. However, with the closure of the inn, the name “Vernon Valley” gradually faded from common usage, remaining primarily associated with the local street.
The area initially referred to as “Red Hook” was situated around the intersection of NYS Route 25A, Main Street, Waterside Avenue, and Vernon Valley Road. This location served as the focal point for the community. Following the incorporation of the village of Northport in the late 1800s, the northwest quadrant of the Red Hook area became part of the newly established village boundaries.
