The name “The Gateway to Jones Beach” refers to Wantagh.

In early settler records, Wantagh is referred to as “Jerusalem”. The Jerusalem River once flowed through the area that is now the Wantagh Creek, which is still visible between the Wantagh Parkway and the housing projects west of Wantagh Avenue despite being mostly covered over. Although mail delivery from Brooklyn started about 1780, the first post office was constructed in 1837 for Jerusalem. The first school in the community opened its doors in 1790. Ridgewood was the new name given to Jerusalem sometime in the 1880s, and “Ridgewood Station” was the inaugural LIRR station in the town. Subsequently, Wantagh replaced Ridgewood’s name to prevent confusion with another municipality of the same name in New York State.

The CDP is 4.1 square miles (11 km2) in total, of which 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) are land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2), or 7.25%, are water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Warm temperate climate (type Cfa) characterizes Wantagh, with scorching summers, chilly winters, and moderate spring and fall temperatures. The year-round precipitation is evenly distributed, with minor surges in early winter and early spring. Because of its south shore position, it is in hardiness zone 8a, whereas the majority of Long Island is in zone 7b.

Junior High:
Wantagh is mainly under the borders of the Wantagh Union Free School District, and is therefore under its jurisdiction. Nonetheless, the Seaford Union Free School District serves a few minor communities along the hamlet’s eastern boundaries. Additionally, the Levittown Union Free School District serves pupils who reside in the parts of Wantagh that are north of Jerusalem Avenue. As a result, depending on where in the hamlet they live, Wantagh residents who attend public schools will attend school in one of these districts.
