The oldest settlement in Brookhaven’s core region is called Coram. “Wincoram” was its original name, possibly the name of a Native American who may have resided in the region as late as 1703. William Satterly was probably the first European to establish in the area. He applied for permission to build a tavern in 1677 so that he could serve travelers.
When Benjamin Tallmadge and his Light Dragoons came during the American Revolutionary War, he and the twelve Culper Ring men took 300 tons of hay that the British were keeping for their horses’ winter nutrition and set it on fire. After learning of the developments, George Washington wrote Tallmadge the following letter: “I have received with much pleasure the report of your successful enterprise upon fort St. George, and was pleased with the destruction of the hay at Coram, which must be severely felt by the enemy at this time.” I humbly ask that you accept my gratitude for your enthusiastic handling of this transaction. Coram commemorates the occasion in October each year.
The Town of Brookhaven government met in Coram from 1784 until 1885, spending a large portion of that time at the Davis Town Meeting House. Constructed during the 1750s, the Davis House is the oldest surviving building in Coram and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

The CDP was home to 34,923 people, 12,530 households, and 9,121 families as of the 2000 census . There were 2,532.1 people per square mile (977.6/km2) in the population. At an average density of 933.9 per square mile (360.6/km2), there were 12,880 dwelling units. The CDP’s racial composition was 1.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.1% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 3.1% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. The majority of the population was White. In terms of race, 9.5% of people were Hispanic or Latino.
There were 12,530 homes, of which 35.3% included children under the age of 18, 57.9% consisted of married couples sharing a home, 11.4% included a female householder living alone, and 27.2% did not belong to a family. Individuals made up 21.3% of all households, and 6.1% of them had a single person 65 years of age or older. The mean dimensions of households were 2.75 and families were 3.22 on average.
25.1% of the people in the CDP was under the age of 18, 7.9% was between the ages of 18 and 24, 33.5% was between the ages of 25 and 44, 24.1% was between the ages of 45 and 64, and 9.3% was over the age of 65. Thirty-five was the median age. There were 93.1 men for every 100 females. There were 89.2 males for every 100 girls over the age of 18.
In the CDP, the median income for a family was $70,769, while the median income for a household was $61,309. The median income for men was $46,905, while it was $34,545 for women. In the CDP, the per capita income was $24,597.
