However, the landscape gradually transformed as the once-flourishing duck farms dwindled, making way for residential development projects. Today, remnants of this heritage persist, with Cornell University maintaining a Duck Research Laboratory on Old Country Road (Suffolk CR 71), serving as a testament to Eastport’s agricultural legacy.
Eastport’s geographical position is unique, as it spans across the border of the towns of Brookhaven and Southampton. As per data from the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place (CDP) covers a total area of 5.4 square miles (14.0 km2), comprising 5.3 square miles (13.6 km2) of land and 0.12 square miles (0.3 km2), which accounts for approximately 2.41% of its area, is water.
Based on the 2020 census, Eastport had a population of 2,219 individuals, residing in 656 households and 544 families. The population density stood at 264.7 inhabitants per square mile (102.2/km2), with 637 housing units, averaging 116.0 per square mile (44.8/km2). The racial composition was predominantly White (89.48%), followed by Black or African American (1.75%), American Indian (0.48%), Asian (1.11%), with 7.08% from other races, and 7.56% identifying with two or more races.
Among the households, 83.23% were married couples, while 12% of residents lived alone, with 10.4% aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.00, and the average family size was 3.24.
In the 2021 American Community Survey, Eastport’s population slightly decreased to 2,095 individuals. The age distribution showed 19.9% under 18, 4.9% aged 18 to 24, 24.1% aged 25 to 44, 28.5% aged 45 to 64, and 22.7% aged 65 or older, with a median age of 45.3 years. The male-female ratio was 90.6 males for every 100 females, and 12.6% identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Regarding income, the median household income was $121,250, with the median family income at $138,333, and a per capita income of $45,891. Approximately 6.01% of the population lived below the poverty threshold, with 3.34% of those aged 60 or over.
Brookhaven Town Hall is situated on the eastern side of Bald Hill within the community.
Eastport falls within the jurisdiction of the Eastport-South Manor Central School District.
