The early white immigrants utilized what is now Franklin Square as grazing pasture and then agriculture. Franklin Square was located close to the middle of the Hempstead Plains.There were forests of dogwood and oak in the southern part.
Robert Fordham and John Carman signed a pact with the Massapequak, Mericoke, Matinecock, and Rockaway tribes in late 1643, agreeing to purchase an area of around 100 square miles on which to establish a new town. They bought this tract, which included a large portion of the present-day communities of North Hempstead and Hempstead.
George Washington visited the village in 1790 while on a tour of Long Island. “Entirely treeless except for a few scraggly fruit trees,” he noted in his diary. In the spring of 1840, Walt Whitman worked for three months as the schoolmaster of the Trimming Square school district, which is located around the intersection of Franklin Square, Garden City South, and West Hempstead.
A Louis Schroeher constructed a hotel next to the Hempstead-Jamaica Turnpike’s tollgate in 1852 (by what is now Arden Boulevard). The hotel brought more and more tourists and immigrants from New York City—many of them German—to the once-rural town.
The CDP is all land, with a total area of 2.9 square miles (7.5 km2), according to the US Census Bureau.
Stewart Manor borders Franklin Square from the north, Garden City and Garden City South from the northeast, North Valley Stream from the southwest, West Hempstead from the east, and Elmont from the west.
2010 Census
There were 29,320 people living there as of the 2010 United States Census. 7.2% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 3.2% African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.75% Other Races, and 2% Two or More Races made up the population of 75.1% Non-Hispanic White. Thirteen percent of people were Hispanic or Latino, regardless of race.
2000 Census
The CDP had 29,342 residents as of the United States Census of 2000, comprising 10,187 households and 7,833 families. There were 10,169.2 people per square mile (3,926.4/km2) in the population. At an average density of 3,591.9 per square mile (1,386.8/km2), there were 10,364 housing units. 93.97% of the population of the CDP was White, 0.99% African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.79% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.75% other racial groups, and 1.38% of multiracial groups. Latino or Hispanic, regardless of race, made up 6.89% of the population.
10,187 households were counted, with 31.4% consisting of children under the age of 18, 62.9% being married couples living together, 10.4% having a female householder living alone, and 23.1% being non-families.
Franklin Square is a portion of the Town of Hempstead and is represented by Melissa Miller on the Hempstead Town Council. It is situated within the town’s third council district. Moreover, Anthony D’Esposito represents the hamlet as part of New York’s 4th congressional district.

Serving Franklin Square are the following:
Elmont Union Free School District, Valley Stream 13 Union Free School District, and Franklin Square Union Free School District are the three elementary school districts.
There are two central high school districts: Valley Stream Central High School District for the Valley Stream 13 area, and Sewanhaka Central High School District for the Franklin Square SD and Elmont UFSD parts.
The two public high schools (North Valley Stream H.S. is located in Franklin Square under Valley Stream District) and the four public elementary schools in Franklin Square (Willow Road School is located in Franklin Square under Valley Stream District) are covered by the Valley Stream Union Free School District 13. Washington Street School, John Street Elementary School, H. Frank Carey High School, and Polk Street School are all part of the Franklin Square Union Free District 17. The majority of children in the western portion attend Covert Ave School and Sewanhaka High School, which are part of District 16 (Elmont School District).
