Greenwood Heights is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, partly named after the nearby Green-Wood Cemetery by real estate developers. It’s situated within Brooklyn Community District 7, alongside Windsor Terrace, Sunset Park, and South Slope. The debated borders roughly stretch from the Prospect Expressway to the north, Gowanus Canal and Upper New York Bay to the west, Eighth Avenue to the east, and 39th Street to the south, which marks the boundary with the Green-Wood Cemetery and the northern boundary of the 36th-38th Street Yard and South Brooklyn Railway.
Initially considered part of South Brooklyn, Greenwood Heights was incorporated into Sunset Park in the 1960s. However, by the 1980s, it gained recognition as a separate neighborhood. Presently, Greenwood Heights overlaps with both Sunset Park and South Slope.
South Brooklyn played a significant role in the Battle of Brooklyn (Battle of Long Island) in August 1776, a pivotal engagement in the American Revolutionary War, with some of its famous residents buried in Green-Wood Cemetery. From the 19th to the mid-20th centuries, the economy was largely shaped by the bustling Brooklyn waterfront. During the mid-20th century, the area that now encompasses Greenwood Heights was known as Bush Terminal. This designation covered what is now the Industry City complex, situated west of Third Avenue and the Gowanus Expressway. Following its classification as a “poverty area” in 1966, the region from 36th Street to the Prospect Expressway became part of Sunset Park. By the late 1980s, the area began to be referred to as Greenwood Heights. As the process of gentrification gained momentum in South Brooklyn during the 2000s, the neighborhood increasingly adopted the name Greenwood Heights, or alternatively, South Slope.
Greenwood Heights boasts a diverse architectural landscape, featuring a blend of wood-frame, vinyl-sided, and brick residences. This eclectic mix contributes to the neighborhood’s unique ambiance, distinguishing it from its neighboring areas such as Park Slope to the north and Sunset Park to the south.
It has an elementary school, PS 172. Al-Noor School, a private school that teaches Arabic and Islamic culture, opened in 1995 on 4th Avenue between 20th and 21st streets.
The area is served by the 36th Street, 25th Street, and Prospect Avenue stations on the New York City Subway’s BMT Fourth Avenue Line, which serves the D, N, R, and W trains. The B37 and B63 buses also serve the neighborhood.
