The Jericho Union Free and Syosset Central School Districts, whose borders are slightly different from the hamlet’s, serve the area. The Jericho Post Office borders are not the same as the hamlet or school district borders; for example, part of Jericho is located in the Westbury ZIP code, while part of Syosset is located in the Jericho ZIP code.
Originally a portion of Robert Williams Plantation, Jericho was located in the Town of Oyster Bay in 1648. The English family who moved to Jericho were either Quakers or converted to the Society of Friends shortly after. Numerous people left the New England Colonies and England because of persecution. They were farmers who wanted a quiet life. After the Middle Eastern town near the Jordan River that the Bible mentions as being a portion of the Promised Land, Jericho replaced Lusum as the name of the region in 1692.
After getting married to Jemima Seaman in 1771 and relocating to her family’s farm in Jericho, Elias Hicks quickly rose to prominence as a prominent Quaker theology preacher. During the British occupation of Long Island during the Revolutionary War, all Quakers suffered. It was customary to quarter soldiers in people’s houses, who were required to host and feed them. The Quakers persisted in opposing the idea of war in general. Peace returned to Jericho after the war, and the tidy fields and businesses started to thrive. In Jericho, a Friends Meeting house that dates back to 1788 is still in use today.
There was a post office founded in 1802, a cider mill in the middle of the 1800s, and the first public elementary school (known as the Cedar Swamp School) opened its doors in 1905. Infrastructure was improved in 1923 when the Jericho Water District was established. A volunteer fire department was founded in 1938 and a new elementary school, Robert Seaman School, was constructed in 1953 as a result of the population growth. The population continued to grow until the construction of Jericho’s final elementary schools, the Cantiague School in 1963, the now-closed Robert Williams School in 1961, and the George A. Jackson Elementary School in 1957.
The CDP is all land, with a total area of 4.1 square miles (11 km2), according to the US Census Bureau.
In the Town of Altona, County of Clinton, in the very northeastern part of the state, there is another community in New York that goes by the name Jericho. Most of it is situated along Rand Hill Road.
Climate
Jericho is classified as having a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) that transitions into a hot, summertime humid continental climate (Dfa) according to the Köppen climatic classification system. As a result, spring and fall normally have pleasant weather, summers are hot and muggy with sporadic thunderstorms, and winters are typically cold with snow and rain.From 30.9 °F in January to 74.7 °F in July, the hamlet experiences a range of average monthly temperatures. 7a is the local hardiness zone.
The CDP has 13,045 residents in 4,545 homes, including 3,813 families, according to the 2000 census. There were 3,214.1 people per square mile (1,241.0/km2) at that density. At an average density of 1,133.4 per square mile (437.6/km2), there were 4,600 dwelling units. 86.36% of the population was White, 10.69% Asian, 1.42% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other racial groups, and 0.98% from two or more racial groups made up the CDP. Latino or Hispanic of any race made up 2.44%.
Like many other northern Nassau County communities, Jericho has historically been home to a sizable Jewish community. East Asian immigrants moved to Jericho in extraordinary numbers in the 2010s, attracted by the city’s elite public school system and excellent standard of living. As a result, by 2020, the CDP’s racial composition has significantly changed, standing at 48.1% White, 46.5% Asian, 1% African American, and 3% racial mix. 2.5% of people identified as Hispanic or Latino, regardless of race. Asian students in the Jericho Union Free School District already make up roughly 70% of the student body as of 2020, up from 33% in 2010.
38.6% of the 4,545 homes included children under the age of 18, 74.8% were made up of married couples, 7.1% included a female householder living alone, and 16.1% were not families. One person made up 13.7% of households, and one person 65 years of age or older made up 6.1%. The average size of a family was 3.08 while the average size of a household was 2.81.
26.3% of the population was under the age of 18, 4.6% was between the ages of 18 and 24, 25.4% was between 25 and 44, 28.4% was between 45 and 64, and 16.4% was 65 or older. It was 42 years old on average. There were 94.3 men for every 100 females. There were 90.2 men for every 100 girls over the age of 18.
Ireland’s national carrier, Aer Lingus, has its U.S. office located in Jericho. The headquarters of Nathan’s Famous are located in Jericho, in Wing A on the second level of One Jericho Plaza.
