The settlement was home to 6,522 people, 2,113 households, and 1,629 families as of the 2000 census. There were 1,694.6 people per square mile (654.3/km2) at that population density. At an average density of 594.2 per square mile (229.4/km2), there were 2,287 dwelling units. The village’s racial composition was 1.1% African American, 1.7% Asian, <0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.0% other races, 0.9% two or more races, and 95.2% White. At 3.4% of the population, any race was Hispanic or Latino.
Among the 2,113 homes, 37.6% included children under the age of 18, married couples made up 69.7% of the population, single women made up 5.5% of the household, and non-families made up 22.9%. Individuals made up 20.8% of all households, and 13.0% of them had a single person 65 years of age or older. The average size of a family was 3.62 while the average size of a household was 3.09.
A mayor and board of trustees are elected to lead the Village of Lawrence. Alex H. Edelman, who was elected in 2014, is the current mayor. The mayor is one of the five members of the board of trustees. The following people are on the board of trustees:
The village board’s term restrictions were recently implemented in Lawrence. There is a three-year term limit for the mayor and a four-year time limit for trustees.
The towns of Atlantic Beach, Cedarhurst, Inwood, Lawrence, and portions of Woodmere and North Woodmere are served by the Lawrence Public Schools, School District 15.
Students at the K–12 Modern Orthodox Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway follow a dual curriculum of Jewish and secular studies. Situated at Frost Lane and Washington Avenue, the Pre-School, Kindergarten, and Elementary schools are housed on a single campus.
Situated in Lawrence, the Brandeis School is a traditional Jewish day school.
A yeshiva called Mesivta Ateres Yaakov is situated in Lawrence.
