Rocky Point is known for being the location of the former Radio Central, a large transmitting and transmitter research facility operated by the American radio company RCA. Radio Central played a significant role in transmitting transatlantic radio messages starting from November 5, 1921. Additionally, on January 7, 1927, AT&T initiated the first transatlantic commercial telephone service, with its transmitter located at Radio Central.
The Radio Central site, spanning 5,200 acres, was decommissioned in 1978 and demolished in the 1980s. Today, it is part of the Rocky Point Pine Barrens State Forest, within the Long Island Central Pine Barrens. The area contains numerous concrete ruins, downed telephone poles, and radio towers, offering a glimpse into the site’s operational period. Owned by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the forest also serves as the western terminus of the 125-mile-long Paumanok Path hiking trail, with the eastern terminus located at the Montauk Point Light.
Rocky Point is situated on the North Shore of Long Island. As per data from the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place (CDP) covers a total area of 11.3 square miles (29.3 km2), entirely consisting of land.
According to the 2010 census, Rocky Point had a population of 14,014 people, residing in 4,820 households, with 3,615 families. The population density was 1,240.2 inhabitants per square mile (478.8/km2), with 5,366 housing units at an average density of 474.9 per square mile (183.4/km2). The racial composition of the CDP was predominantly White (93.7%), with smaller percentages of Black or African American (1.5%), Asian (1.6%), and individuals of other races (1.6%). Hispanic or Latino individuals made up 7.0% of the population.
In terms of household makeup, 42.7% included children under 18, 57.9% were married couples, and 11.8% were headed by a female householder without a husband present. About a quarter of households were non-families, and roughly 20% consisted of individuals. The average household size was 2.89, and the average family size was 3.34.
The population distribution by age was fairly balanced, with 27.2% under 18, 8.1% aged 18 to 24, 28.8% aged 25 to 44, 27.2% aged 45 to 64, and 8.8% aged 65 or older. The median age was 36.8 years. The gender ratio was nearly equal, with slightly more females than males.
In terms of income, the median annual income for a household was $87,752, and for a family, it was $99,304. Median income for males was $66,103, while for females, it was $48,529. The per capita income was $33,183. Approximately 3.6% of families and 5.6% of the population fell below the poverty threshold, including 8.2% of those under 18 and 1.6% of those over 65.
